Fewer skills, manageable keybinds: what a returning player actually asked for in a DPS class

A 26 October request for manageable keybinds drew replies about optimal Hunter play. A 27 October beta retrospective shows why those are different questions.

On 26 October a returning player asked r/wowforever for help picking a first Forever character. They wanted an easy-to-play damage dealer with not too many skills on the hotbar and a manageable number of keybinds, and were torn between Enhancement Shaman, Arms Warrior and a Beast Mastery or melee Hunter. They did ask for a ranking, but the constraint they set was comfort, not top damage.

The replies showed how differently that can be read. Customrunner said every Hunter has melee-ranged weaving in their best rotations. Kureishi answered that the asker didn't sound like a speedrunner, and that most Hunters would not be weaving at all. Other commenters disagreed about which class is simplest; we are not settling that here.

A beta retrospective posted on 27 October sharpens the Hunter side. Its author says the highest Hunter builds they saw involved some melee or ranged weaving, and objects to it as a very high-APM style that most players can't or won't pull off and that causes problems with raid mechanics and positioning. They also argue that Hunters' melee and ranged swing timers should not run separately. Those are the author's assessments of the beta, not measured results, and they don't show that every Hunter has to weave.

Blizzard's 16 October development notes add older context: an Auto Attack/Auto Shot setting that, when enabled, switches a Hunter automatically between auto attack and auto shot, with gamepad support. That is a control option; the notes don't say it removes any reason to weave. For a player who mainly wants a routine that fits their hands, the useful line is between what is comfortable to play well and what the most demanding players chase.
