Hunters must stand still for half a second before Auto Shot

The 16 October notes restore an early-WoW rule: Auto Shot, and wands, need half a second of standing still before firing. Casting Aimed Shot or Sniper Shot does not stop it, and a new setting switches between melee and ranged.

Hunters in Forever need to stop before they shoot. Blizzard’s 16 October development notes say Auto Shot now requires you to stand still for 0.5 seconds before firing, matching early versions of World of Warcraft.

What the rule covers

  • Auto Shot waits for half a second of standing still.
  • Wands follow the same rule, so this affects casters with a wand as well.
  • Casting is not the same as moving. Blizzard says your character will still fire Auto Shot while casting spells such as Aimed Shot or Sniper Shot.

The habit it asks for

Move, stop, wait half a second, shoot. If you are kiting, the stops need to be deliberate, because a quick tap of movement keys resets the wait. The notes do not mention any way to shorten or skip the half second, and it is best not to plan around tricks from other versions of the game.

A new setting for switching

The same notes add an “Auto Attack/Auto Shot” option. When enabled, Hunters switch automatically between melee auto attack and Auto Shot, and it works with a gamepad too. For a Hunter who often ends up with an enemy in melee range, it removes a manual step.

The notes also made arrows visible while a bow is drawn back, so you can now see the shot you are waiting on.
