Blizzard’s final racial pass: what changed for Humans, Dwarves, Tauren, Orcs, Trolls, Undead and Skyborne

A 26 October staff update, completed in two corrections on 27 October, rolls back some generic racials, cuts Read Leyline’s base bonus in half, shortens the Blood Fury and Touch of the Grave cooldowns, lengthens Troll Berserking to 15 seconds and removes Plainsrunning’s mounted bonus. Blizzard also clarified that Attuned and Charged are removed upon entering a raid. These are announced changes, not yet seen in a game client. Early player reactions question names and which classes benefit.

Updated 27 October: At 15:36 UTC on 27 October, Blizzard edited its 26 October post to add an Orc change and an Undead change. A follow-up from Kaivax less than a minute later says these were “intended to be listed”, and clarifies that Skyborne’s Attuned and Charged are removed upon entering a raid. About an hour later, at around 16:47 UTC, Kaivax edited both posts again to add a Troll change: Berserking now lasts 15 seconds, up from 10. When we first checked the additions that afternoon, the Troll line was not there. These are corrections to the announcement, not a new game patch. We checked the additions on the US thread and its EU counterpart. The new lines are marked below.

Blizzard has taken what it calls a final pass on Forever’s racial traits. Community manager Kaivax added the changes to the WoW Forever development notes at 20:35 UTC on 26 October, in matching posts on the US and EU forums.

The beta closed on 23 October, so these changes arrive as announcements. We have not seen them in a game client.

Why the racials changed again

Some players, the post says, found the new racials too generic, while others felt some were objectively stronger than the rest. Blizzard’s answer is to prioritize racial identity. It accepts that some races will be slightly more effective in certain combat roles, and it is rolling back some of the places where it had swapped role- or class-focused racials for generic ones.

Weapon specialization racials are the exception, and Blizzard names Human Sword Specialization and Orc Axe Specialization as examples. It does not want future raid and dungeon loot to be weighed by “required” weapon types, so those stay out. The remaining passives get a tuning pass.

Race by race

Human

  • Ruthless: 1% increased critical strike chance, down from 2%.
  • Human Spirit: increases Spirit by 10%, up from 5%.

Dwarf

  • Earth Fury (2% increased critical strike damage and healing) is removed.
  • New: Artisan’s Precision increases hit chance with spells and attacks by 1%.

Tauren

  • Plainsrunning: 2% movement speed per stack, up from 1%, for a maximum of 60%, up from 30%.
  • Plainsrunning no longer increases mounted movement speed.
  • Endurance: now only 5% increased Health. Its hit chance and critical damage modifiers are gone.

Orc

  • Savage (1% increased critical strike chance) is removed.
  • Command returns, increasing Hunter and Warlock pet damage by 5%.
  • Added 27 October: Blood Fury’s cooldown drops to 2 minutes, from 3.

Troll (added later on 27 October)

  • Berserking: duration increased to 15 seconds, from 10.

Undead (added 27 October)

  • Touch of the Grave: internal cooldown reduced to 15 seconds, from 25.

Skyborne

  • Wind-Blessed: haste bonus reduced to 2%, from 3%.
  • Read Leyline: increases Mana and Health regeneration by 50%, down from 100%, for 15 seconds. It cannot be used while Innervate is active, and Innervate, described as the more powerful effect, replaces it.
  • Using Read Leyline at a Ley Line also grants Attuned for one hour. While Attuned, Read Leyline’s bonus rises to 100%. Attuned persists through death and, as clarified on 27 October, is removed upon entering a raid.
  • Skysight: 15% increased movement speed, up from 10%, for 15 seconds.
  • Using Skysight at an elemental convergence also grants Charged for one hour. While Charged, Skysight’s bonus rises to 30%. Charged persists through death and, as clarified on 27 October, is removed upon entering a raid.

What the notes leave open

No cooldown is given for Read Leyline or Skysight. Attuned and Charged last an hour, but as written they raise the benefit of each use; they do not turn Read Leyline or Skysight into hour-long effects, which still last 15 seconds. The raid rule names raids only. The notes do not say whether Attuned or Charged survive entering a dungeon or any other instance. The 16 October notes had raised Read Leyline’s minimum duration to 30 seconds; this newer post sets it at 15 seconds, replacing that earlier figure. The post does not explain how the regeneration bonus is calculated, and it does not say which race is now strongest for any role. We are not ranking races on these notes.

Several races, among them Gnome and Night Elf, still have no entry in this post. Nor does it mention Orc Shatter Curse, Dwarf Find Treasure, or the 16 October rule that a Tauren must keep covering ground to hold Plainsrunning.

How players are weighing ‘identity’

Blizzard framed this pass around racial identity and accepted that some races will be slightly more effective in certain combat roles. Player posts on r/wowforever the next day, 27 October, tested that aim from different directions. One poster writing about the Human trait said they were fine with Ruthless's 1% critical strike bonus but questioned the name, arguing that a word meaning ‘without mercy’ sits poorly with a race they associate with the Holy Light and the first Paladins, and suggested framing it around martial prowess or proficiency instead. A poster writing about Orc racials came at it from usefulness: they accept racials favoring some classes, but argued that Command, which helps only Hunter and Warlock pets, does nothing for every other Orc class, and proposed adding mount and flight-path speed to it. That is a suggestion; Blizzard has not announced anything like it.

A third post shows what the pass can mean for actual plans. Its author says the recent racial changes are affecting the choice they and their wife are making: they had intended a Human Warrior and Paladin, and are now leaning toward Troll, pairing the Warrior with a Shaman or Priest, with the author planning to tank as Protection and preparing for Hardcore. We chose these three posts because they show different sides of identity: a name, which classes benefit, and attachment to a planned character. They are not a measure of how most players feel, and they react to the 26 October pass, not to any newer change.

What this changes in our earlier coverage

Several of our drafts reported the 16 October notes and are getting dated revisions. Plainsrunning loses its mounted bonus. Earth Fury, mentioned in our Find Treasure piece, is gone. Savage no longer sits beside Shatter Curse. The player debate over Read Leyline now has to deal with an official cut to its base bonus.

If a racial will decide your race before you reserve a name, read its text in the game when you can, rather than relying on what you remember from the beta.
