Blizzard halves Read Leyline’s base bonus. What that settles in the mana debate, and what it doesn’t

Beta healers called the Skyborne racial overpowered. Blizzard’s 26 October notes cut its base regeneration bonus to 50% for 15 seconds, keep 100% for players Attuned at a Ley Line and rule it out while Innervate is active. On 27 October Blizzard added that Attuned is removed upon entering a raid; whether it survives entering a dungeon is not stated. We have not measured the new version.

Updated 26 October: Blizzard has changed Read Leyline since this article was first written. The reporting on the two player threads below is unchanged in substance, but it now describes the version they were judging, and the new values come from Blizzard’s own notes.

Updated 27 October: In a follow-up post, Blizzard clarified that Attuned is removed upon entering a raid, and edited its 26 October post to say so. This is a clarification of the announcement, not a new game patch. Read Leyline’s numbers are unchanged.

The beta claims (23 October)

A player who says they healed almost exclusively in the Forever beta, in the best gear available, gave a blunt verdict on Read Leyline, a racial players attribute to the Alliance Skyborne. In a thread on the European forums, they described it as increasing mana regeneration by 100% from all sources, including Spirit, drinking, buffs and gear, and predicted it would become the only sensible choice for healers. In their experience, mana rather than throughput was a healer’s main limit in the beta.

A second thread, on the US forums, asked Blizzard to reconsider the racial’s strength, arguing that the math made an Alliance Skyborne feel mandatory for a Restoration Druid. Both were posted in the early hours of 23 October (UTC).

What Blizzard announced on 26 October

Three days later, Blizzard’s final racial pass gave Read Leyline new numbers:

  • It increases Mana and Health regeneration by 50%, down from 100%, for 15 seconds.
  • It cannot be used while Innervate is active, and Innervate, described as the more powerful effect, replaces it.
  • Using it at a Ley Line also grants Attuned for one hour. While Attuned, the bonus rises back to 100%. Attuned persists through death and, as Blizzard clarified on 27 October, is removed upon entering a raid.

So the 100% figure players were arguing over matches Blizzard’s own previous value. Blizzard has halved the base effect while keeping 100% for a player who is Attuned. Our roundup of the 26 October changes covers the other races.

Earlier, the 16 October notes had made Read Leyline castable while moving, raised its minimum duration to 30 seconds from 20, and added more Ley Line spawn locations in most Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor zones. The 26 October post now gives a 15-second duration, replacing that earlier 30-second minimum.

A short effect and an hour-long buff

The 26 October post gives both Skyborne racials the same two layers, and each number belongs to a specific one. Read Leyline's own effect lasts 15 seconds at 50%; the 100% comes from Attuned, the one-hour buff for using it at a Ley Line, not from an hour of the active effect. Skysight follows the same pattern: a 15-second, 15% movement speed increase, raised to 30% while Charged, a one-hour buff granted for using Skysight at an elemental convergence. The notes say both Attuned and Charged persist through death, and Blizzard clarified on 27 October that both are removed upon entering a raid.

That has prompted a question about dungeons. In a video published on 26 October on the hammerdance channel, reacting to the notes, the creator reads them as keeping the stronger bonuses for leveling in the open world while making them less impactful in raids and dungeons, where, on that reading, Read Leyline would be back to 50%. In the video's automatic captions this is offered as the creator's understanding of the text, not something seen in game. Blizzard’s 27 October clarification has since addressed raids: Attuned and Charged are removed upon entering one. The notes still say nothing about entering a dungeon or a new zone. Whether an Attuned healer keeps the 100% bonus after walking into a dungeon is something to check in the game client.

What is still unknown

These are announcements, posted after the beta closed on 23 October, and we have not seen the new version in a game client. The notes give no cooldown. They do not say which regeneration the bonus multiplies, so “from all sources” remains the beta poster’s description, not Blizzard’s. Nor do they show how easily a healer can stay Attuned, which depends on reaching a Ley Line.

The situation matters too. A well-geared healer on a dungeon pull faces a different mana problem from one who is still leveling, or one on a long raid encounter. Neither thread’s opening post describes raid healing (we have not reviewed every reply), and Forever’s raids do not unlock until 9 December. When they do, Blizzard’s 27 October clarification means a healer cannot carry Attuned, and its 100% bonus, into a raid. The notes do not say whether Read Leyline itself can be used inside one.

What a fair test needs

  • The ability text and values from the launch client, not the beta or the notes alone.
  • A recorded setup: level, gear, Spirit and other regeneration sources, and whether the player is Attuned.
  • Comparable fights of known length, with and without the racial.
  • More than one player, so a single rotation does not stand in for a whole race.

We have not run that test. The beta threads judged a version Blizzard has since changed. Treat “S-tier” and “overpowered” as opinions about that version, not as a ranking of the new one.
