In Episode 6 of the official WoW: Forever Podcast, “All About Tech”, published on 29 October, the developer discussion turned to what being data-driven means: when engineers build a feature, a designer can put data in to adjust it. Talents came up as one of the big early challenges. The team didn’t have the old editor for the Classic-era talents, so for years it was really hampered whenever a talent needed changing. The episode named this as one of the difficulties in Season of Discovery, where talents couldn’t easily be manipulated.

What changed, according to the same discussion, is that Forever shares some modern World of Warcraft infrastructure. A designer can now readily adjust the order of talents and where they sit in the trees, which the episode called a capability the team simply didn’t have before.

The discussion then drew a line. Forever isn’t bringing over the design of modern systems; what it takes on is the way the game is built underneath, which lets the team benefit from improvements made across the wider WoW team while it builds its own vision for Forever. The segment describes what the tools allow. It doesn’t name a new talent, a balance pass or a patch schedule, and we haven’t seen the editor itself.
