In “Unbowed”, the Light still answers a Forsaken paladin, and it hurts every time

Blizzard released “Unbowed”, a new WoW Forever short story by Sean Copeland, on 26 October. It comes as a narrated fireside telling, with Jesse Burch as Cormack and illustrations by Surfside 3D, and as a PDF of the story. We read the PDF; we have not reviewed the video.

Blizzard frames it around one question: can a Forsaken still serve the Light?

A power that hurts to use

Cormack was a paladin of the Scarlet Crusade in life. Now he is Forsaken. The story opens with him watching from cover as crusaders execute captive Forsaken, led by the man who killed him.

The Light still answers Cormack. It powers his hammer, strikes his enemies and mends his body. But it hurts, every time. When he heals a hand that has been nearly cut off, the Light forces bone and dead flesh back together and the pain almost blinds him. When he turns it on an undead foe, it burns him as badly as it burns her. The warmth he knew in life has become, in undeath, something violent.

That is the story’s central image: a paladin who keeps calling on a power that punishes him for it, and who cannot quite say why.

The Forsaken he saves

The survivors he rescues do not thank him. They see the tabard of the Crusade that killed them. One, a mage, fights him. Afterwards she asks which of them is really the monster, and describes what the Forsaken have endured and the refuge their Dark Lady made for them. Cormack tears the Crusade’s emblem from his chest and leaves his warhammer in the dirt.

Spoilers: the ending

Spoiler warning: this section describes the story’s final pages, including a family revelation.

At his own open grave, Cormack meets Danitha, another undead paladin, who has brought back the hammer he abandoned. She trained under Gavinrad the Dire, and she tells Cormack that Gavinrad was his father. The words carved into the hammer’s haft, the paladins’ oath, were his father’s.

Danitha asks why he keeps suffering the Light at all. Remembering his father’s teaching that paladins fight for those who cannot fight for themselves, and that the Light answers anyone who asks with their whole heart, Cormack prays in earnest for the first time since he rose. The Light burns him almost past bearing. Then it changes. The pain remains, but under it he finds warmth, hope and a healing that settles instead of devouring. Danitha welcomes him with the oath in the Old Tongue, and he asks her to lead him home.

The story never says the pain goes away. It says something new lies beneath it.

What it does and doesn’t tell players

Undead Paladins are one of the new race-and-class combinations Blizzard has announced for Forever (see Horde or Alliance?). “Unbowed” gives that combination a story: a faith that costs the faithful, chosen anyway.

It is fiction, not patch notes. It introduces no quest, racial or class mechanic. Nor does it set a rule for how every undead priest or paladin relates to the Light. On the day of release, a player on the EU forums asked whether any lore says priests and paladins use the Light differently. “Unbowed” does not settle that in general terms. It tells one paladin’s story.
