On Blizzard’s official End of Beta Special episode of The WoW: Forever Podcast, published on 22 October, a question noted that things were said to be hidden in the first 30 levels and asked for more. The answer was that some secrets had been turned off for the beta, and that there would be things to discover that had not been surfaced.
So, as of that episode, players who explored the opening zones during the beta had not necessarily seen everything in them.
How things were held back
A follow-up recalled an earlier claim on the podcast that thousands of things were being held back, and asked what kinds of things they were. The answer did not confirm that number. It described designers each hiding things here and there and turning them off for the beta.
Another reply described technology that hides items until somebody finds them. It said different kinds of data are treated differently, with items hidden in a different way from other assets such as mounts. For dungeons and raids, the answer described an effort to preserve the surprise by holding back maps, so that players could not load into some of them at all. It added that people exploring the maps had not been able to reach the ones that were obscured.
These are accounts of the approach, not a technical description or a security guarantee.
A question left open
The answer raised a question that realmless play creates: whether finding an item should count for one ruleset or everywhere. It said questions like that had to be worked through, and gave no rule.
Not everything waited for launch
The answer also gave an example of something held back that came out during the beta itself: a torch item whose quest had been turned off at first and was switched on later, partly to test it. More things in that category, it said, were to be expected.
Reading beta reports
A zone you cleared in the beta may hold something that was not active then, and an item, quest or spot that never appeared in the beta may simply have been switched off. That does not tell you what is there or how much. Beyond the torch example, this exchange did not say where the other secrets are, how many there are, or whether any particular find is available at launch.
This account paraphrases the 22 October recording. It is not a transcript, and it does not describe the live game.
