Seal of Fury: the Paladin tank’s 10-yard taunt, and the shield that comes with it

Forever’s new tanking seal adds a constant Holy bonus to every swing, a non-stacking absorb shield and a Judgement that taunts from 10 yards. How the three parts work, what changed in the 16 October notes, and one beta player’s question about the early levels.

In Forever, a Protection Paladin’s taunt comes out of a Seal. Blizzard’s Paladin deep dive of 15 October introduces Seal of Fury, a new seal learned at level 10 whose Judgement taunts the target, and its three parts work together.

The three parts

A bonus on every swing. Each melee swing deals bonus Holy damage. Unlike Seal of Righteousness, the bonus is constant per swing, so it favors a fast weapon while tanking: more swings, more bonus hits.

An absorb shield. The Paladin gains an absorption shield equal to 50% of that bonus Holy damage. The deep dive says it does not stack from multiple applications.

A taunt on Judgement. Judging Seal of Fury deals extra Holy damage and taunts the target. Because the taunt comes through Judgement, it reaches 10 yards. The deep dive compares that with the 5-yard range of a Druid’s Growl and a Warrior’s Taunt, and calls it a unique ability to reach enemies farther away than other tanks can.

Judgement also no longer consumes the active seal, so taunting with it does not cost you your seal.

The talents built around it

At 11 points, Protection’s gold medal, Improved Seal of Fury, returns mana each time one of the seal’s shields is fully consumed, with a larger return when the attacker is higher level than you. Blizzard points to raid bosses as the case it is designed for.

At 16 points, Swift Judgement instantly finishes Judgement’s cooldown and makes the next one free. Blizzard pitches it for a resisted taunt, or for taunting several enemies quickly. The Precision talent now raises the hit chance of all spells and attacks, which Blizzard says helps the Seal of Fury taunt land more reliably. It does not make it certain.

Changes since the deep dive

The development notes posted on 16 October made two fixes. Seal of Fury is no longer overwritten by Power Word: Shield, and Seal of Fury Rank 3 is now trainable at level 26, as intended, rather than 25. An 8 October fix had already stopped the seal returning mana without the Improved Seal of Fury talent.

A player’s question about the early levels

On 27 October a player who leveled a Warrior in the last days of the beta compared the two tanks on r/wowforever. Their level 14 Protection Warrior, they wrote, could do far more than their level 20 Paladin, which they felt had two buttons to press, plus the occasional reseal and an expensive Consecration. Their sharpest point is about Judgement: because it is their main damage and threat button as well as their taunt, they say taunting to recover lost threat isn't really an option. They don't want a retail-style Paladin. They ask whether a limited, one- or two-target version of Avenger’s Shield would really hurt, as one more decision to make in combat. Blizzard has not announced any such ability, and this is one player's impression at unequal levels, not a measured comparison.

The 15 October deep dive gives the published timeline behind that early experience. Holy Strike, instant Holy damage based on weapon damage, arrives at level 6; Seal of Fury and its Judgement taunt at 10; Consecration, now learned by every Paladin, at 20, redesigned to deal moderate damage to only the first four enemies so that its threat stays at parity with a Warrior’s Thunderclap. The tension the player describes, Judgement as damage versus Judgement as taunt, is the gap Swift Judgement is designed to cover, as described above, but as a 16-point talent it is not part of the opening kit. None of this disproves how the class felt to that player; it shows which tools the published design relies on, and when they arrive.

What to take from it

Seal of Fury makes weapon speed a real choice for a Paladin tank, and it makes Judgement’s availability your taunt plan. Keep track of the cooldown, because the deep dive does not give one and Swift Judgement exists precisely for the moment it is not ready.
