Kargoz’s beta mage run to level 10: what the recording shows, and two clocks that don’t match

In a video published on 22 October, Kargoz puts his beta run at about 1:25:04. On screen, the recording later shows 1:25:40 played, 15 seconds of it at level 10. His advice on legacy points, mana and crowded quests is the useful part.

On 22 October, Kargoz published a video of a mage run from level 1 to 10, recorded on the Forever beta. He presents it as the best of a series of mage attempts and, near the start, gives his time as about one hour, 25 minutes and four seconds. He adds that better movement and a better feel for experience benchmarks could probably have saved another minute or two.

The video’s title calls the run a world record. That is the creator’s framing. We have not compared it with other runs, and nothing here ranks it.

What the recording shows at the end

About an hour and 33 minutes into the video, the screen shows the level 10 message. Moments later, the chat shows a total time played of 1 hour, 25 minutes and 40 seconds, and 15 seconds played at the current level.

Those numbers do not line up with the figure in the introduction. Even taking off the 15 seconds at level 10 leaves 1:25:25, which is 21 seconds more than 1:25:04. Nothing in the commentary and on-screen moments we reviewed explains what Kargoz’s own figure is measured from or to, or reconciles the two, so we leave them side by side. We have not timed the run ourselves or checked whether the footage is continuous.

Spend the legacy points first

Kargoz advises investing your legacy points as soon as you spawn, before you forget. About eight minutes into the video, still in Northshire, the recording shows the Legacy Tree open with a tooltip for a talent called Talented at rank 1 of 5. That shows the panel in use during the run. It does not show how all of his points were allocated.

Mana is the budget

Much of Kargoz’s advice is about keeping the mana flowing. He says he cast Fireball for almost the whole run and trained Frostbolt later, which he thinks is worth doing if you are confident you have enough drink to finish. He did not conjure his own water. Instead, he managed his gold so that he always had bought water to hand, and stocked up on Ice Cold Milk once he reached Goldshire.

His general rules are familiar mage fundamentals: keep a reserve of drinks, do not overspend or underspend mana, and do not let your mana sit capped.

Crowded or clear

The route he followed was his own adjustment of a common addon route, and one change shows how he made decisions on the move. After leaving the starting zone, at around the 30-minute mark by his account, he picked up a set of murloc quests straight away, which he notes is off the base route. As he passed the murloc crates, he checked whether they were available. If they were open and nobody was competing for them, he says, it made sense to do the quest there and then. If the area had been crowded, he would have come back later in the run.

That is advice for a beta run with the conditions he had. How crowded those areas are at launch is another matter.

The advice in this piece paraphrases Kargoz’s commentary in the 22 October video. The level 10 and played-time details are what appears on screen in the recording.
