Discipline shields and Warrior rage: what the developers said the interaction should be

On the 1 October official podcast, shields were described as not stopping a Warrior from gaining rage from damage, with an acknowledged beta rage bug alongside. Dated intent, not a client test.

In Episode 2 of the official WoW: Forever Podcast, published on 1 October, a closing question asked what Discipline is meant to do better than Holy in PvE. The answer, as the episode's automatic captions record it, set out rough roles rather than a ranking. Discipline's strength is shields: they are stronger than Holy's, and among healers only Priests have them. Holy is probably a little better at healing a whole party at once; Discipline probably a little better at keeping a tank alive.

The discussion then turned to Warriors. Discipline, it was said, gets an indirect boost because Warriors can still gain rage through shields. A caveat came in the same breath: Warriors weren't getting much rage from taking damage in the beta at the time, which was called a bug, and the described intent is that once the correct amount of damage rage is restored, a shield does not prevent that rage gain. Others on the episode recalled the old main-tank habit of disliking shields, even keeping a cancel in a macro, and treated the change as a real plus for Discipline.

This is design intent from 1 October, paired with an acknowledged beta bug. We have not confirmed that the bug was fixed or how much rage a shielded Warrior gains in the launch client, and the excerpt says nothing about Druid tanks. If it works as described, Warrior tanks would no longer have that reason to cancel a Discipline Priest's shield.
