Battleground rewards for raiders, raid gear in battlegrounds: the overlap Forever’s 15 October podcast said it wants

Blizzard’s PvP episode used historical examples to describe wanting rewards to stay useful across PvP and PvE, and called siloing players into one mode a pitfall. A design direction, not an item list.

On Blizzard’s official PvP episode of The WoW: Forever Podcast, published on 15 October, a discussion of itemization and open-world PvP turned to wanting to keep the overlap between kinds of play that the original game had.

The examples

The examples were historical. Players ground reputations in battlegrounds for items worth using in PvE content, and took a raid weapon into battlegrounds to cut through other players. The answer said the aim is for that organic overlap to still exist, with room for creative expression in duels and battlegrounds.

It also said the intent is to be careful about making PvP feel too competitive, to have it feel freeform, and not necessarily to set too many rules.

The model to avoid

A later question asked whether the PvP system might grow over time, with more battlegrounds, rewards and perhaps something more competitive. The answer said the aim is for PvP to feel casual, and for battlegrounds to be fun before they feel like an obligation to grind, while rewarding people who put in effort: the rank 14 PvP armor should look amazing, as a reflection of that effort.

But the answer said the intent is not to silo people into doing PvP in order to be the best at PvP. It called it a pitfall to port arenas directly over from Burning Crusade or Wrath of the Lich King, with a currency specific to them, because that goes against the overlap between kinds of content that is the aim.

What this means for your plans

On this account, the intent is that battleground rewards are not automatically wasted on a raider, and that raid gear is not dead weight in a match. That is a design direction, not a promise about any particular item. This discussion gave no item specifications, item tables or guarantees about how any item performs, so test real rewards before you commit to farming a reputation for them.

This account paraphrases the 15 October recording. It is not a transcript, and it does not describe the live game.
