Running into familiar names again: Blizzard’s stated social goal for realmless Forever
Blizzard’s 13 September Deep Dive recap says realmless rulesets should still let players keep crossing paths with familiar names. What that goal covers, and what the recap does not say about how placement works.

Without realms, there is no home server to bring you back to the people you met last week. Blizzard’s Deep Dive panel recap, published on 13 September, answers this as a goal rather than a mechanism.
The stated goal
The recap says the realmless structure is meant to combine the benefits of larger populations with the sense of belonging that realms gave. While leveling, questing and exploring, players should still cross paths with familiar names. That might be someone who helped finish a quest, someone who raced you to the same mining node, or someone who simply waved as they passed. Blizzard’s aim is for strangers to become familiar faces, and familiar faces to become a community, even at a much larger scale.
The structure around it
The same section sets the limits that goal works within. Each ruleset works more like its own large ecosystem than a single realm, and the recap says it is not one giant realm for everyone. You can group, run dungeons and raid with players on your ruleset. Grouping across rulesets is not supported, and Horde and Alliance stay apart.
Names help with recognition. Characters use two-part names that are unique per region, which the recap says keeps identities recognizable across the larger connected world.
Where the recap stops
This is a design goal. The recap does not describe how players are placed in the world, whether past groupmates are favored, or any promise that you will meet a particular person again. If you want to keep playing with someone, the step the recap supports is choosing the same ruleset and faction, because it lists grouping within a ruleset as supported.
