Choosing a launch main when the class advice comes with a warning

WillE's nine-class compilation warns that details may have changed since its clips were made. Two earlier Reddit threads offer tests that don't depend on those details: what you want to look at, and what happens when you have to step away.

With two days to go, some of the class advice around comes with a warning attached. WillE's ULTIMATE WoW Forever Class Overview, uploaded on 2 November, is a compilation of their class series, running 2 hours 6 minutes across nine chapters. The stated goal is a high-level overview of what to expect from your choice of main, because full class guides "are just missing too much information at the moment". And the description adds: "Keep in mind certain things may have changed from when I originally made the videos, but Blizzard are pushing tons of changes frequently".

That's worth taking literally. A new upload date doesn't make every clip in it current, and we haven't watched the compilation or tested its claims. Its chapters are a useful map if you want one class at a time: Paladin at the start, then Warrior at 14:39, Hunter at 31:13, Shaman at 43:37, Rogue at 1:00:47, Druid at 1:11:19, Mage at 1:25:55, Priest at 1:38:54 and Warlock at 1:52:15.

If the details may move, what's left to decide on? Two earlier Reddit threads offer criteria that don't depend on them.

What do you want to look at?

Halx-88 hadn't played an MMO in 15 years and wanted to tank. A Dwarf Paladin appealed, but they'd read it was the most complex tank and worried about playing it badly as they got older and played less. Feral Druid sounded easiest, except it felt "a bit silly to grind for cool-looking gear, only to spend almost all your time in an animal form". Warrior didn't appeal.

Several replies told them to pick what appealed. "Play what ya want," wrote Sweaty_Break9338, and ten minutes later Halx-88 had decided on the Dwarf Paladin.

What happens when you have to step away?

A different thread raised something EnvironmentalAngle felt class guides miss. They argued that Hunter is the best "dad" class because of Feign Death: "Oh your baby is crying? Dismiss Pet and Feign Death and boom you're safe." The criterion is a good one, whatever you think of the answer. Can you stop at a moment's notice?

The answer itself isn't settled. dany_xiv warned that in Classic, Feign Death becomes real death once the timer runs out, and said they weren't sure if that would be the same in Forever. leemanc100 asked whether it has a timer that makes you get up after a certain amount of time. We can't tell you from these posts whether it's safe, so don't rely on it until someone has tested it on live servers.

So use the overview to get a rough idea of what a class does, and be ready for that to change. The questions those two posts raise will still be yours on 4 November: what do you want to look at for months, and how does the class fit the life around it?
