At a glance

Herbalism gathers plants for Alchemy and other recipes. It uses a primary profession slot and needs no gathering tool. You still pay training costs and spend travel time, so "no materials required" does not mean every herb you gather is free of opportunity cost. Alchemy is a natural partner; another gathering profession is possible if you accept its tracking tradeoff.

Use this Herbalism planning route in Forever. Current Forever object tooltips confirm the herb skill requirements below. Trainer gates and geographic loops remain inherited planning leads; live spawns and new herb locations are not verified here. This is public-source research, not our own game test.

Start with Wild Harvest when offered. This bind-on-pickup, Unique starter reward can teach Herbalism if you have an open primary-profession slot, then adds two skill up to 15. Current quest reward records include A Humble Task in Mulgore and The Woodland Protector in Teldrassil. It does not teach higher ranks or create a third primary slot. Pick the gathering book for the profession you intend to keep.

RankInherited rank gate and cap
ApprenticeCap 75; the new starter book can teach the skill; check the current level gate if learning from a trainer
JourneymanSkill 50; cap 150
ExpertSkill 125 and character level 10; cap 225
ArtisanSkill 200 and character level 25; cap 300

Gathering uses lower character-level gates than crafting in the Classic baseline. Ask an ordinary Herbalism trainer for the next rank before reaching the cap. Alliance options include Tannysa in Stormwind, Reyna Stonebranch in Ironforge and Firodren Mooncaller in Darnassus; Horde options include Jandi in Orgrimmar, Martha Alliestar in Undercity and Komin Winterhoof in Thunder Bluff. Check current Forever rank gates at the trainer.

Herb requirements

These minimum effective-skill requirements match current Forever herb-object tooltips. They do not guarantee that gathering awards a point or that a particular spawn is available. A successful pickup can be green or gray, and a failed attempt can be retried if the node remains available.

Required skillHerbs
1Peacebloom, Silverleaf
15Earthroot
50Mageroyal
70Briarthorn
85Stranglekelp
100Bruiseweed
115Wild Steelbloom
120Grave Moss
125Kingsblood
150Liferoot
160Fadeleaf
170Goldthorn
185Khadgar's Whisker
195Wintersbite
205Firebloom
210Purple Lotus
220Arthas' Tears
230Sungrass
235Blindweed
245Ghost Mushroom
250Gromsblood
260Golden Sansam
270Dreamfoil
280Mountain Silversage
285Plaguebloom
290Icecap
300Black Lotus

A herb's threshold tells you whether you can pick it, not which zone has the highest supply. Terrain matters: Stranglekelp grows underwater, Wild Steelbloom and Mountain Silversage favor elevated ground, and Ghost Mushroom is associated with caves. Do not plan a road-only loop for a plant that needs water or cave access.

The route by skill range

SkillPractical routeWhat keeps the bracket moving
1-70Gather through your starting zone while questing; use a loop around accessible hills and open groundPeacebloom, Silverleaf and Earthroot; add Mageroyal from 50 where available, using a nearby second zone if needed
70-115Alliance can use Darkshore or Loch Modan into Wetlands; Horde can use Barrens or Silverpine into HillsbradBriarthorn, Mageroyal and accessible Stranglekelp; Bruiseweed from 100
115-170Wetlands, Hillsbrad or Stonetalon, then Arathi Highlands as safe for your levelWild Steelbloom, Kingsblood and Liferoot at 150; train Expert before 150
170-205Arathi Highlands or Stranglethorn Vale, following terrain with several herb familiesGoldthorn, Fadeleaf, Liferoot and Khadgar's Whisker from 185
205-230Tanaris or Searing Gorge when the enemies are safeFirebloom and Purple Lotus; train Artisan before 225
230-270Hinterlands, with a safe Felwood alternative when your character can handle itSungrass, Purple Lotus and Blindweed from 235, then Gromsblood and Golden Sansam; Ghost Mushroom caves only at 245
270-300Felwood, Plaguelands or Un'Goro; Winterspring is an Icecap alternative from 290Dreamfoil, Mountain Silversage, Plaguebloom and Icecap maintain useful skill colors

Keep the earlier zone until you can gather enough of the next one's common herbs. Moving to the Hinterlands at 225 does not let you gather its Sungrass at 230, and traveling to a Black Lotus spawn at 299 does not finish the final point. Use still-relevant common herbs for those bridges.

There is no reliable fixed number of herbs or circuits to 300. Skill colors, competition and node respawns change the result. Move to a quieter overlapping-herb loop when your target plant is scarce instead of waiting indefinitely at one known spawn.

Gathering efficiently

Turn on Find Herbs and watch the minimap as well as the ground. Its current Forever tooltip permits only one tracking type at a time. If you also learn Mining, switch between Find Herbs and Find Minerals as you survey a route; you can keep both professions, but their minimap trackers do not run together. Dwarves' revised Find Treasure is a separate exception: Blizzard allows it to remain active alongside another tracking ability.

Clear a safe access path before gathering. A pet can hold an enemy, but area attacks can still interrupt you or hit the pet. Stealth and travel abilities shorten detours without making hostile camps safe.

Herbalist's Gloves add 5 effective skill, and Enchant Gloves, Advanced Herbalism adds another 5 when applicable. Such bonuses can unlock a node early but do not increase base skill or unlock the next rank for you. Keep the gloves equipped for the pickup and switch back to combat gear when needed.

What to keep and what to sell

Match your bank stock to a real crafting plan. Peacebloom and Silverleaf support low-level recipes; Briarthorn, Stranglekelp and Goldthorn can be bottlenecks in crafting routes; Dreamfoil, Mountain Silversage, Plaguebloom, Icecap and Black Lotus support high-end consumables. Their actual sale value varies with the economy and available recipes.

A fastest-skill route is not a complete Alchemy shopping route. You can reach the next Herbalism bracket while still lacking an Alchemy herb. Check the Alchemy guide before selling a herb you will need to buy back. Income varies with competition, travel time and current prices.

New herbs, seeds and Scarce materials

Current item records include the new level-60 reagents Marefoil, Demonsage and Death Lotus. Their gathering locations and required Herbalism skill are not established in the checked sources. An item's level is not a gathering requirement. Do not assign them to an invented 300-skill loop or buy a large batch based on a claimed spawn map.

The current profession report identifies Frilled Lichen, Rosecap and Stranglevine as Herbalism's Scarce bonus materials; each current item tooltip carries the Scarce label. These are additional crafting inputs, not replacements for the ordinary herb in your Alchemy shopping list. Bountiful Harvest targets this category rather than doubling every Peacebloom pickup.

Four reported seed tiers are Commonplace, Uncommon, Unusual and Scarce Herb Seeds. The Greenhouse grows herbs from planted seeds, and the higher Seed Hybridizer multiplies or combines seeds. Exact seed-drop sources, growth outcomes and conversion quantities remain unverified here. Obtain the blueprint and inspect the object before buying seeds for a promised yield. The camping guide gives current profession gates and known blueprint sources.

Forever additions and verification limits

Blizzard confirms Herbalism's Incense Candle camp object and profession blueprints, plus Legacy support for gathering. The public beta reports seed and scarce-material systems, but the official overview does not establish a complete spawn map or every material's drop probability. Keep unfamiliar reagents until you have inspected their current recipes and value.

Use the camping guide for the camp system. Exact Greenhouse growth rules, seed combinations and new herb zones need current-client checks. Blizzard's October 15 notes add a character-level requirement to Tauren Cultivation tied to the herb's gathering requirement, so it is not an unrestricted low-level duplicate of every high-tier herb.

In Forever, Bountiful Harvest increases specifically Scarce materials from Mining, Herbalism and Skinning in the current public data. It is not a promise to double every ordinary herb, ore or leather drop. Working Overtime separately affects skill-up chance; neither supplies a fixed number of nodes or corpses to 300.
