Engineering Leveling Guide, 1 to 300
Forever recipe materials and saved components through 300, trainer and schematic gates, specialization turn-ins and access limits.
Researched from public sources, not tested in game. Some details come from Classic and may differ in Forever.

At a glance
Engineering makes bombs, tools, scopes, guns and utility devices. Many finished items require Engineering skill to use, so crafting a device does not imply you can sell it to every class. Pair it with Mining for stone and bars. Keep a Blacksmith Hammer, an Arclight Spanner and, later, a Gyromatic Micro-Adjustor, and craft at the required anvil.
The main route uses current Forever recipe data, with upper training and schematic acquisition conditional on access. Keep saved components for later rows. This is public-source research, not our own game test.
| Rank | Gate in the current public route | Alliance | Horde |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apprentice, cap 75 | No Apprentice level gate reported in the beta | Jemma Quikswitch, Ironforge; Sprite Jumpsprocket, Stormwind | Thund, Orgrimmar; Graham Van Talen, Undercity |
| Journeyman, cap 150 | Skill 50, level 10 | Trixie Quikswitch, Ironforge; Lilliam Sparkspindle, Stormwind | Nogg, Orgrimmar; Franklin Lloyd, Undercity |
| Expert, cap 225 | Skill 125, level 20 | Springspindle Fizzlegear, Ironforge | Roxxik, Orgrimmar |
| Artisan, cap 300 | Skill 200, level 35 | Buzzek Bracketswing, Gadgetzan | Buzzek Bracketswing, Gadgetzan |
Train Artisan with Buzzek at Engineering 200 and character level 35, before the Expert cap of 225. The Classic trainer page and current Forever route agree on this gate. Reaching the skill number alone does not remove the character-level requirement.
The route by skill range
Counts refer to crafting actions, not necessarily the number of items produced. Bomb and dynamite recipes can produce more than one item. Save intermediates until their named later step, and learn the next rank before batch-crafting across a cap. Yellow or green recipes may require extra crafts.
| Skill | Approximate crafting actions | Batch reagents and what to save |
|---|---|---|
| 1-30 | 60 Rough Blasting Powder | 60 Rough Stone; keep all powder |
| 30-50 | 30 Handful of Copper Bolts | 30 Copper Bar; keep bolts |
| 50-51 | 1 Arclight Spanner | 6 Copper Bar; keep the tool |
| 51-75 | 30 Rough Copper Bomb | 30 Copper Bar, 30 saved bolts, 60 saved powder, 30 Linen Cloth |
| 75-90 | 60 Coarse Blasting Powder | 60 Coarse Stone; keep powder |

| 160-175 | 15 Explosive Sheep | 30 saved Heavy Blasting Powder, 15 saved gizmos, 15 saved frameworks, 30 Wool Cloth |
| 175-194 | About 60 Solid Blasting Powder | 120 Solid Stone; keep all powder |
| 194-195 | 1 Gyromatic Micro-Adjustor | 4 Steel Bar; keep the tool |
| 195-200 | About 6 Mithril Tube | 18 Mithril Bar; retain 6 for Gnomish specialization if wanted |
| 200-215 | About 20 Unstable Trigger | 20 Mithril Bar, 20 Mageweave Cloth, 20 saved Solid Blasting Powder; keep triggers |
| 215-238 | About 40 Mithril Casing | 120 Mithril Bar; keep casings |
| 238-250 | About 20 Hi-Explosive Bomb | 40 saved casings, 20 saved triggers, 40 saved Solid Blasting Powder |
| 250-260 | About 30 Dense Blasting Powder | 60 Dense Stone |
| 260-285 | About 35 Thorium Widget | 105 Thorium Bar, 35 Runecloth |
| 285-300 | About 20 Thorium Tube | 120 Thorium Bar |
For the displayed route, the working budget is about 60 Rough Stone, 66 Copper Bar, 50 Linen Cloth, 60 Coarse Stone, 5 Silver Bar, 110 Bronze Bar, 25 Weak Flux, 10 Moss Agate, 30 Heavy Stone, 60 Wool Cloth, 15 Medium Leather, 4 Steel Bar, 120 Solid Stone, 158 Mithril Bar, 20 Mageweave Cloth, 60 Dense Stone, 225 Thorium Bar and 35 Runecloth. It excludes specialization turn-ins and additional unlucky crafts. It also leaves some Bronze Tubes and contacts unused; sell them only after checking your other plans.
If Silver Bars are costly, Flying Tiger Goggles use leather and Tigerseye instead. If Moss Agate is scarce, start the Heavy Blasting Powder work earlier. Iron Grenade is a practical alternate skill-up and useful finished item around 175; it changes the stone, iron and cloth budget. A lower auction-house price for one reagent does not prove the whole alternative is cheaper: compare total craft cost minus any realistic sale value.
Gnomish or Goblin
The inherited specialization gate is skill 200 and character level 30. It is optional for reaching 300. Gnomish offers distinctive tools such as Gnomish Battle Chicken and Gnomish Death Ray; Goblin lets you craft Goblin Sapper Charges and its own devices. An Engineer of the other specialization can buy and use many tradeable devices, including Sapper Charges where the item permits it. Choosing Gnomish does not ban you from using every Goblin item.
Gnomish steps. Take the introduction through Tinkmaster Overspark in Ironforge for Alliance or Oglethorpe Obnoticus in Booty Bay for Horde, sign the pledge and turn in 6 Mithril Tubes, 1 Accurate Scope and 2 Advanced Target Dummies. Buy the Accurate Scope schematic from Mazk Snipeshot in Booty Bay before preparing the turn-in, or buy the finished scope.
Goblin steps. Follow the introduction to Nixx Sprocketspring in Gadgetzan, sign the pledge and turn in 20 Big Iron Bombs, 20 Solid Dynamite and 5 Explosive Sheep. Save five of the sheep from leveling if taking this route. Count finished bombs and dynamite, since a recipe can yield multiple items per craft.
The inherited switching method requires fully unlearning Engineering, losing skill and known recipes, releveling to 200 and then using Soothsaying for Dummies at Steamwheedle Port. Some Gnomish bind-on-pickup devices remain usable after a switch if they only require Engineering, while specialization-specific teleporters do not. Make this a deliberate long-term plan, not a routine recommendation to relevel twice. Verify Forever's current specialization and item requirements before copying the trick.
Recipes worth buying or farming
Satchel of Copper Bombs is a current thrown-weapon option at Engineering 85 for an eligible level-13 character. Both schematic and finished Unique weapon bind on pickup. Current vendor records list the schematic for 45 Merchant's Favor from Fritz Fizzle at Three Corners for Alliance or Fizzlefuse outside the Crossroads' west gate for Horde. Each craft uses 20 finished Rough Copper Bombs, 6 Light Leather and 4 Handfuls of Copper Bolts. Its attacks explode near the target; do not break crowd control with it. This optional weapon is different from a stack of ordinary bomb consumables. See the new recipe guide for the current use requirements.
Schematic: Thorium Widget comes from Gearcutter Cogspinner in Ironforge or Sovik in Orgrimmar. Schematic: Thorium Tube comes from Xizzer Fizzbolt in Everlook. The current Forever source says the Tube schematic binds on pickup, so send the actual Engineer to buy it. Limited stock and world-drop plans are different problems; check the acquisition method before camping a vendor.
Accurate Scope matters for the Gnomish turn-in. Repair bots, grenades, target dummies and jumper cables have specific skill, recipe and use restrictions; inspect them before a dungeon. A target dummy buys time, not permanent tank threat, and a device can fail or backfire.
Mechanical Squirrel Box is a low-level world-drop schematic. Flame Deflector and Ice Deflector are consumable devices. Check the named recipe's actual source before planning a dungeon or reputation farm.
Forever checks and tips
The current public source reports the Gnome Engineering racial replacing its flat skill bonus with fewer device failures. Treat beta racial numbers as a current observation rather than an immutable launch rule. The upper route remains provisional even though many skill ranges match Classic.
Check the current camping guide for profession stations and blueprints. Carry tools and components before visiting Buzzek, and leave bag space for bomb outputs. Do not sell every intermediate just because it has already given its skill points: triggers, casings and powder pay for later steps.
In Forever, the October 16 public data lists Working Overtime as an increase to tradeskill skill-up chance. That can change expected material use on yellow or green recipes; it does not mean an exact 20% reduction in every shopping list. The route budgets do not assume that perk. Bartering discounts vendor items under its current rules, not training or repairs, so do not subtract it from every profession expense.
