At a glance
Warrior tanks with a shield in Protection and deals melee damage through Arms or Fury. You use Rage, stances and weapon attacks. Carry a shield even when you are leveling as damage: an Arms or Fury Warrior can tank leveling dungeons with appropriate gear and a controlled pull size.
Build examples use beta build 1.60.1.70425, snapshot 2026-10-16. This is public-source research, not an in-game test. The current beta cap is 30; level-60 allocations are higher-level plans. Without the Legacy Talented perk, class points begin at level 10. Dual Specialization unlocks at level 40. Visit a major-city class trainer to change talents.
Every original race and Skyborne can play Warrior. Skyborne can join either faction. Compare the revised racial abilities for your role rather than choosing from an older ranking.
Leveling build
Starting plan. Arms still leads naturally toward Sweeping Strikes and Mortal Strike, but Tactical Mastery is baseline at level 14, retaining 10 Rage across stance changes. Improved Tactical Mastery adds to that amount. Spearing Strike is the new 16-point attack, and Weaponmaster replaces the separate weapon-specialization talents. Improved Slam now belongs to Arms and no longer resets your autoattack. Follow the prerequisite arrows and point order in the current calculator.
- Upgrade your weapon before buying small armor upgrades. Train its weapon skill on safe enemies after switching weapons.
- Charge when safe, use your main strike when available, and use Overpower when it triggers. Keep Battle Shout active. Rend is useful when it will run long enough to repay its Rage; Forever adds Attack Power scaling to it.
- Use Sweeping Strikes against two controlled targets. Save enough Rage for the next important attack instead of spending every point on Heroic Strike.
- Use Hamstring to prevent a runner reaching another pack. Interrupt with Pummel or Shield Bash in the required stance and equipment.
- Eat or bandage between pulls. Forever's Victory Rush, learned at level 20, provides a heal after killing an eligible enemy; do not assume it will rescue you before you have earned its activation.
At beta cap 30, Mortal Strike, Bloodthirst and Shield Slam are still beyond the point budget, and baseline Whirlwind is learned at level 36. For damage, use the available build attack, Overpower procs, a worthwhile Rend and Rage-aware Heroic Strike or safe Cleave; Execute becomes available at level 24 for targets at 20% health or less. For shield tanking, build threat with Sunder Armor, use Revenge after a block/dodge/parry and cover dangerous melee with Shield Block.
Dual-wield Fury is an alternative, but its white attacks miss often with low weapon skill and little hit. A good two-hander is a simpler solo starting point. Complete the stance quests and learn the appropriate weapon and armor proficiencies before relying on abilities that require them.
Stance quests before tanking
Defensive Stance requires level 10. Follow your race's Warrior trainer quest before arriving as the dungeon tank; reaching the level or selecting Protection talents does not finish that quest. The documented Skyborne The Skybreaker Bulwark route starts with Seena Skybreaker in Valanaar. Reclaim the named bulwark from Zaal Stormshield at the Shrine of Akir and return to Seena. The current quest rewards Defensive Stance and Stormforged Protector. Confirm the offered quest for your Skyborne variant rather than assuming the indexed eligibility covers both. Other races use their own trainer leads.
Berserker Stance requires level 30. The current The Islander lead sends you to Klannoc Macleod. His The Affray stage on Fray Island requires stepping on the grate to begin, defeating Big Will and returning to Klannoc. Recover health and prepare your equipment before starting the event. This stance unlock and the later Whirlwind weapon preparation are separate steps; do not assume you need to finish the weapon farm merely to learn the stance.
Bind both stances after learning them and rehearse changing stance, equipping the shield and using Shield Bash on a safe target. Higher-level Pummel does not replace that beta-cap interrupt preparation.
Endgame builds by role
Protection tank. Vanguard permits Defensive Stance Charge, Master of Defense rewards avoidance with Rage, and Focused Rage and Bastion support shield play. Defiance's Forever threat bonus requires a shield. Taunt and Shield Block improvements are baseline; spend the available talent points on the current shield and survival tools.
Tank with Defensive Stance, a shield and a clear kill target. Prioritize Shield Slam and Revenge, build Sunder Armor threat, maintain the assigned attack-power and attack-speed debuffs, and use Shield Block against dangerous melee swings. Spend spare Rage on Heroic Strike or Cleave only after covering those tasks. Tab through a pack to establish threat; Thunder Clap helps, but crowd control and a marked target are safer than assuming one area attack holds everything. Forever permits Thunder Clap in Defensive Stance and lets Sunder generate threat even when a stronger Expose Armor is present.
Taunt makes a mob attack you and matches threat when it lands; follow it immediately with a threat ability. A taunt-immune target needs threat and positioning instead. Face enemies away from the group and keep their frontal attacks off melee players. Shield Block lasts at most seven seconds and covers only two attacks, so a pack can consume it quickly. Use Shield Wall or Last Stand before predictable lethal damage, and tell your healer when a cooldown is running. In Forever, Shield Wall, Retaliation and Recklessness no longer share a cooldown.
Fury damage. Prioritize Bloodthirst, then Whirlwind when it will not hit crowd control, and dump excess Rage through Heroic Strike. Below 20% enemy health, Execute becomes important; keep enough Rage for the next decision rather than following a fixed button sequence. Attack from behind whenever possible.
Raging Blows reduces the Rage cost of Cleave and Whirlwind. Furious Precision improves off-hand hit chance. Bloodthirst grants movement speed rather than a direct heal. Death Wish supplies a 30-second Physical-damage and fear-immunity window but increases incoming damage by 5%; use it when sustained contact and survival allow, including at the level-30 Fury checkpoint. Protection's Defiance requires a shield, so its threat benefit does not apply to a dual-wield setup.
Arms damage and PvP. Build around Mortal Strike, Sweeping Strikes and a two-hander. Use Mortal Strike's healing reduction against susceptible healing targets, including players in PvP. Use Mortal Strike, Overpower and multi-target Sweeping Strikes while controlling Rage. In Forever, weave the revised Slam and Spearing Strike when appropriate to your build. Protect healers with Hamstring, Disarm and Intercept; save a stance change and interrupt for the enemy cast that matters.
Current Forever allocations
Choose a role below and open its checkpoint or full plan in the current Warrior calculator. Level-30 checkpoints spend 21 points; level-60 plans spend 51. The lists show every allocated rank.
These checkpoints and level ranges assume zero ranks in the Legacy Talented perk. Talented makes points available earlier, but the total remains capped at 51. Select your actual Talented rank in the calculator when using an earlier checkpoint. Follow the listed order; each number is additional points in that step, and omitted talents have zero points.
Arms questing and two-handed damage: 31/20/0. Two-handed weapon. Arms reaches Mortal Strike at 31 Arms points, level 40 in this zero-Talented order; later Fury points add critical strike, slower Rage decay and control. This does not include every optional PvP snare talent.

What to look for on gear
Damage wants a strong weapon, Strength or Attack Power, critical strike and applicable hit. Furious Precision specifically improves off-hand hit chance, reaching 10% at three ranks; it does not improve a two-hander or shield setup. The Arms and Protection examples therefore put those support points into Lingering Rage. Check the current attack type, talent and target before treating any inherited hit threshold as a final Forever cap.
Use a slow, hard-hitting main hand for weapon-damage attacks; an off-hand is chosen for its total damage and stats, not because both weapons must have the same speed. Train every weapon type you intend to equip.
Tanks balance Armor, Stamina, Defense skill, avoidance and reliable threat. Shield Block, encounter mechanics and healer capacity all matter; a single inherited Defense target does not establish complete protection in Forever. Keep a threat set and a survival set when the encounter justifies them rather than blindly maximizing one stat.
Forever merges spell, melee and ranged hit and critical strike stats, reduces weapon-skill bonuses on items and introduces avoidance-reduction stats. Those changes do not prove that every attack uses an identical hit threshold. Check combat results and current theorycraft before declaring a new cap.
Current dungeon examples. For shield tanking, Rath'mael in Ruins of Lordaeron drops Mirror of Rath'mael, requiring level 19 with 547 Armor, 5 Strength and 1% block chance. Compare the whole shield to yours, including Armor and block. For a two-handed damage plan, Unstable Sentinel in City of Dalaran drops Guardian's Dualblade at level 28: a 3.50-speed two-handed axe. Train Two-Handed Axes before using it; its armor proc does not replace the shield required by Protection's tools.
Consumables, utility and group play
Carry healing potions, bandages and appropriate food. Melee damage can use Elixir of the Mongoose and Strength buffs; tanks may need Greater Stoneshield Potion or a boss-specific protection potion. Use resistance gear and resistance consumables for an assigned encounter, not as a permanent replacement for a complete survival set. Windfury Totem is a raid-wide player buff in Forever, separate from a temporary weapon enchant. Check the current tooltip and stacking rules before choosing an additional weapon consumable.
Keep Battle Shout on raid members within its range, maintain assigned debuffs, coordinate interrupts and announce a tank swap before moving the boss. Challenging Shout is an emergency temporary fix, not permanent threat on every target. Do not break Polymorph, Sap or a trapped target with Whirlwind, Cleave or Thunder Clap.
Forever checks and common mistakes
In Forever, Rage from incoming damage now ignores Armor and absorption, while outgoing Rage is normalized and critical strikes generate more. A Priest shield therefore does not prevent the incoming-damage Rage generation described by these rules.
Current training gates matter for early groups: Shield Bash arrives at level 12 and needs a shield; Shield Wall arrives at level 28 and requires a shield and Defensive Stance. Pummel is learned at level 38, above the current beta cap, so a level-30 damage Warrior still needs the shield-based interrupt plan.
Before your first dungeon, check stance bindings, shield swaps, a trained weapon skill, interrupt access and your emergency cooldowns. Before a raid, confirm your role, debuff assignment, hit assumptions and whether your saved allocation matches the current talent snapshot.
