At a glance

Warlock deals ranged Shadow and Fire damage, manages a demon and turns health into mana through Life Tap. All three trees are damage paths. You also bring Healthstones, Soulstones, Ritual of Summoning, curses and Banish. A Voidwalker can tank ordinary quest enemies. Warlock is not a normal group tank role; any special ranged-tanking assignment needs an encounter-specific resistance and threat plan.

Build examples use beta build 1.60.1.70425, snapshot 2026-10-16. This is public-source research, not an in-game test. The current beta cap is 30; level-60 allocations are higher-level plans. Without the Legacy Talented perk, class points begin at level 10. Dual Specialization unlocks at level 40. Visit a major-city class trainer to change talents.

Alliance Warlocks are Human or Gnome; Horde includes Orc, Undead and Troll. Compare the revised racial abilities rather than importing an old race ranking.

Leveling build

Starting plan. Affliction now gains Pandemic and Soul Siphon, then Wrack at 31 points. Grim Reach extends Affliction spell range. The familiar damage curses become Banes, leaving room for a utility Curse at the same time. Pets scale from your stats, Life Tap gains Spirit scaling and Drain Soul can produce shards during its channel. Dark Pact is absent from the current tree; plan mana recovery around the tools actually available.

  1. Apply Corruption and the appropriate damage-over-time effect only if the enemy will live long enough for them to work.
  2. Let a tanking pet establish threat or prepare to drain and control the enemy yourself. Do not assume a Voidwalker can hold every target against full damage.
  3. Use Drain Life when its healing is useful, an efficient direct cast when it will finish the fight sooner, and a Nightfall Shadow Bolt before its opportunity is wasted.
  4. Life Tap between safe pulls, eat or drain back health, and drink when needed. Tapping to a sliver of health before incoming damage is not efficient play.
  5. Fear toward cleared ground. A fleeing enemy can bring back another pack; use the current curse and crowd-control toolkit to stop a runner before it reaches another pack.

At the level-30 checkpoints, Wrack and Incinerate are not yet available. Affliction can finish a durable pull with Drain Life, learned at level 14, or an efficient Shadow Bolt. Destruction uses Shadow Bolt between Immolate and its learned Conflagrate/Shadowburn tools. Its checkpoint has no Shadow and Flame ranks, so Conflagrate consumes Immolate and Shadowburn depends on the non-trivial target dying within eight seconds for its shard return. Searing Pain, learned at level 18, has high threat; do not spam it into a player tank's opening threat lead.

Demon training and shard recovery

Follow your class trainer's demon-quest leads rather than assuming a talent unlocks the pet. Current summon learning levels are Imp at 1, Voidwalker at 10, Succubus or Incubus at 20, and Felhunter at 30. For the Horde Voidwalker final stage, The Binding sends you back to Gan'rul Bloodeye in Orgrimmar or Carendin Halgar in Undercity after using the supplied summoning item to subdue a Voidwalker. Follow the accepted faction chain before attempting that ritual.

Budget for Grimoires from a Demon Trainer as well as your own spells. A demon's summon spell does not automatically supply every rank of Torment, Blood Pact, Devour Magic or its other abilities. Check the active pet's spellbook and automatic-cast settings after training.

Out of Soul Shards: Summon Imp requires no shard, so it provides a recovery option. Train Drain Soul at level 10, leave an inventory slot free and channel it on a non-trivial enemy. Current Drain Soul can award a shard during the channel and guarantees one when it kills a non-trivial target. Rebuild a reserve before using shard-consuming summons and group utility.

Endgame builds by role

Forever Affliction. Keep Corruption, the chosen Bane and other useful Affliction effects active, use Wrack as the main drain-style filler, and spend Nightfall opportunities on instant Shadow Bolt. Soul Siphon benefits from your other Affliction effects, while Pandemic supports their critical damage. Refresh effects when needed rather than clipping half their duration repeatedly. On short-lived adds, a direct cast can be better than paying for several full-duration dots.

Forever Demonology. Demonic Brand, Demonic Knowledge and Master Demonologist support pet-active play. Demonic Pact at 31 talent points lets a sacrifice buff persist while a different demon is summoned; resummoning the sacrificed demon still removes that effect. Choose the sacrifice and active demon deliberately. The published version gives the Imp sacrifice a Shadow bonus and the Succubus or Incubus sacrifice a Fire bonus, so check the exact demon before sacrificing it.

Apply Demonic Brand with Searing Pain so your active demon can consume its attack charges; refresh as the charges or duration run out. Shadow Bolt is the supported direct filler between applications. Demonic Brand halves Searing Pain's generated threat, while its Shadow pet follow-up explicitly has high threat, so monitor both your threat and the pet's. With Decimation, Shadow Bolt or Searing Pain against a target below 35% health opens a faster, shard-free Soul Fire window.

Forever Destruction. Keep Immolate active for Incinerate's bonus, use Conflagrate and Shadowburn to support Shadow and Flame, and use Incinerate as the main Fire cast. Confirm the current talent rank before assuming Conflagrate preserves Immolate or Shadowburn returns its shard. Bane of Havoc copies part of damage done to other targets onto its marked target; it is a cleave tool, not extra damage from casting only at that same marked target. Remember the one-Bane-per-Warlock-per-target rule.

Current Forever allocations

Choose a role below and open its checkpoint or full plan in the current Warlock calculator. Level-30 checkpoints spend 21 points; level-60 plans spend 51. The lists show every allocated rank.

These checkpoints and level ranges assume zero ranks in the Legacy Talented perk. Talented makes points available earlier, but the total remains capped at 51. Select your actual Talented rank in the calculator when using an earlier checkpoint. Follow the listed order; each number is additional points in that step, and omitted talents have zero points.

Affliction questing and drain damage: 36/0/15. Corruption and drains into Wrack; range and drain support remain in the allocation. This is a broad starter, not a maximum single-target simulator result.

Level 30 checkpoint, 21 points: Improved Life Tap 2 → Suppression 5 → Improved Corruption 5 → Grim Reach 2 → Improved Drains 3 → Fel Concentration 3 → Siphon Life 1.

Levels 31-40: Pandemic 3 → Malevolence 1 → Nightfall 2 → Soul Siphon 3 → Wrack 1.

Levels 41-60: Shadow Mastery 5 → Destructive Reach 2 → Bane 5 → Cataclysm 3 → Ruin 5.

Level 60 plan, 51 points:

  • Affliction, 36 points: Improved Life Tap 2/2; Suppression 5/5; Improved Corruption 5/5; Grim Reach 2/2; Improved Drains 3/3; Fel Concentration 3/3; Pandemic 3/3; Malevolence 1/5; Nightfall 2/2; Siphon Life 1/1; Soul Siphon 3/3; Shadow Mastery 5/5; Wrack 1/1.
  • Destruction, 15 points: Destructive Reach 2/2; Bane 5/5; Cataclysm 3/3; Ruin 5/5.

Demonology active-pet damage: 0/36/15. At the level-30 checkpoint, keep an active demon for Soul Link: Demonic Pact is not yet learned, so resummoning any demon cancels a sacrifice buff. At the later 31-point capstone, choose the sacrifice and a different active demon together; resummoning the sacrificed demon still cancels that effect.

Level 30 checkpoint, 21 points: Improved Health Funnel 2 → Demonic Embrace 5 → Unholy Power 3 → Demonic Sacrifice 1 → Unholy Power 2 → Fel Vitality 3 → Demonic Energies 2 → Master Summoner 2 → Soul Link 1.

Levels 31-40: Fel Domination 1 → Decimation 2 → Demonic Brand 3 → Demonic Knowledge 3 → Demonic Pact 1.

Levels 41-60: Master Demonologist 5 → Destructive Reach 2 → Bane 5 → Cataclysm 3 → Ruin 5.

Level 60 plan, 51 points:

  • Demonology, 36 points: Improved Health Funnel 2/2; Demonic Embrace 5/5; Unholy Power 5/5; Fel Vitality 3/3; Demonic Energies 2/2; Demonic Sacrifice 1/1; Master Summoner 2/2; Decimation 2/2; Fel Domination 1/1; Demonic Brand 3/3; Soul Link 1/1; Demonic Knowledge 3/3; Master Demonologist 5/5; Demonic Pact 1/1.
  • Destruction, 15 points: Destructive Reach 2/2; Bane 5/5; Cataclysm 3/3; Ruin 5/5.

Destruction Fire damage: 17/0/34. Immolate into Incinerate; Conflagrate/Shadowburn interaction requires the actual chosen ranks. Full Shadow and Flame supports preserving Immolate and refunding Shadowburn shards; confirm each actual effect in the current client.

Level 30 checkpoint, 21 points: Destructive Reach 2 → Bane 5 → Cataclysm 2 → Aftermath 1 → Shadowburn 1 → Aftermath 4 → Conflagrate 1 → Ruin 4 → Bane of Havoc 1.

Levels 31-40: Ruin 1 → Agonizing Flames 3 → Fire and Brimstone 3 → Shadow and Flame 2 → Incinerate 1.

Levels 41-60: Shadow and Flame 3 → Improved Life Tap 2 → Suppression 5 → Improved Corruption 5 → Grim Reach 2 → Improved Drains 3.

Level 60 plan, 51 points:

  • Destruction, 34 points: Destructive Reach 2/2; Bane 5/5; Cataclysm 2/3; Aftermath 5/5; Ruin 5/5; Shadowburn 1/1; Agonizing Flames 3/3; Conflagrate 1/1; Bane of Havoc 1/1; Fire and Brimstone 3/3; Shadow and Flame 5/5; Incinerate 1/1.
  • Affliction, 17 points: Improved Life Tap 2/2; Suppression 5/5; Improved Corruption 5/5; Grim Reach 2/2; Improved Drains 3/3.

What to look for on gear

Spell damage, applicable hit and critical strike support raid damage. Intellect supplies mana, Stamina supplies survivability and Life Tap room, and Spirit gains specific value through Forever's Life Tap and regeneration interactions. Spirit alone is not a reason to choose a low-damage item.

Current Suppression reaches 5% hit and reduces generated threat by 20% at full rank. It is broader than the old Affliction-only hit talent. Count the ranks actually allocated and compare the current target's rules before adopting a final gear cap.

Choose school-damage gear to match the spells you really cast. A Shadow-only item can be strong for a Shadow Bolt build and weak for Fire Destruction. Forever's Firestone and Spellstone become weapon imbues and can coexist with temporary enchants such as Wizard Oil, so read their current bonuses before choosing one.

Current dungeon examples. Plunder in Hall of Thanes drops Golemheart Stave, requiring level 13 with up to 18 spell damage/healing. Its general bonus supports both Fire and Shadow casts. Shadetooth in Excavation Site drops Raptor's Gaze at level 26, with 4 Intellect, 4 Stamina and up to 8 spell damage/healing. Compare the Gaze together with a one-handed weapon against a staff; it cannot be equipped alongside a two-handed staff.

Consumables, utility and group play

Bring Soul Shards, Healthstones, healing and mana potions, appropriate food and the reagents your current spells require. Keep free bag space for new shards. Do not turn a planned summon into a last-minute shard farm while the group waits. Ritual of Summoning consumes a Soul Shard and needs two additional helpers. All participants must be out of combat; helpers click the portal and remain still until it completes. Check the destination is safe before summoning someone there.

Assign a curse and Soulstone target before the pull. Forever's Curse of the Elements supports all magic damage and Curse of Shadows is removed. Banes mean you can maintain your damage-over-time Bane alongside a utility Curse, but two different utility Curses from you still follow their own restriction. Coordinate rather than overwriting another player's assignment.

Current training gates include Ritual of Summoning at level 20, Drain Mana at level 24 and Banish at level 28. Drain Mana is a five-second channel for a susceptible mana-bearing target; use it for an assigned drain rather than assuming every boss or resource type supplies mana. The Felhunter's Devour Magic is listed at level 30, but its first Spell Lock rank is learned at level 36, above the beta cap. A newly obtained level-30 Felhunter therefore does not establish that your group already has its interrupt. Train the actual pet abilities before assigning them.

Banish a marked demon or elemental and watch the remaining duration. Keep the pet passive when its automatic attacks would break a controlled pull. Use Health Funnel where the pet can survive the transfer and you can afford the health. A Felhunter's Spell Lock and Devour Magic are deliberate utility buttons, not reasons to leave every pet action on automatic.

Potential raid supplies include the relevant spell-damage elixir or flask, Wizard Oil, caster food and appropriate protection potions. Use Life Tap in a predictable, safe window and tell the healer if sustained tapping is part of the fight's plan. Never assume the healer has unlimited mana to refill avoidable health loss.

PvP and common mistakes

Affliction pressure, Demonology survival and Destruction burst support different PvP plans. Soul Link transfers 30% of your incoming damage to the active demon and increases both your damage by 3%. Watch the demon's health as well as your own; the shared damage can exhaust it. Use the demon appropriate to the enemy, keep line of sight to your healer or escape path, and Fear where it will not create an uncontrolled pull.

Do not dot a target the group needs to Polymorph or trap, tap below the next predictable hit, assume a pet can path safely down every dungeon shortcut, or sacrifice a pet using a remembered buff from another version. Check your active curse, Bane, stone, shard supply and pet mode before the boss is pulled.
