Shaman talent calculator

At a glance

Shaman heals through Restoration, casts ranged damage through Elemental or fights in melee through Enhancement. Totems provide buffs, resistance, control or healing within their range. Their placement and element matter: dropping a second totem of the same element replaces the first. Enhancement can temporarily hold enemies in small-group emergencies, but this guide does not treat Shaman as a standard raid tank.

Build examples use beta build 1.60.1.70425, snapshot 2026-10-16. This is public-source research, not an in-game test. The current beta cap is 30; level-60 allocations are higher-level plans. Without the Legacy Talented perk, class points begin at level 10. Dual Specialization unlocks at level 40. Visit a major-city class trainer to change talents.

Alliance Shaman are Dwarves; Horde options include Orc, Tauren, Troll and Skyborne. Follow the appropriate faction's trainer and class quests, and check the revised racial abilities.

Leveling build

Starting plan. Two-Handed Axes and Maces is baseline. Enhancement moves Stormstrike to 16 points, adds Shamanistic Focus for cheap shocks, Intellect-to-Attack-Power through Mental Dexterity, and Maelstrom Weapon for faster Lightning Bolts. Rage of the Farseer is a personal deep-tree attack-speed cooldown. You do not learn a party-wide Bloodlust or dual-wield talent merely because similar abilities existed in later expansions.

  1. Keep the weapon imbue appropriate to your weapon, damage plan and threat role. Rockbiter's threat is useful for holding a mob and a problem when you are trying to remain below a player tank.
  2. Open with a suitable Lightning Bolt or shock, then let melee attacks and the build's core abilities work. Keep enough mana to heal or interrupt rather than spending it on every shock cooldown.
  3. Interrupt dangerous casts with Earth Shock, using a low rank when its interrupt is the purpose and the damage is not needed. Its current tooltip locks the interrupted school for two seconds and causes high threat; keep that threat cost in mind when dealing damage behind a player tank.
  4. Drop totems when their duration and effect justify the setup. Replacing a totem at every single short-lived enemy can cost more mana than it saves.
  5. Recall or destroy totems before leaving when possible, so an old totem does not draw a patrol or keep you in combat.

Complete the element-totem class quests needed for your available spellbook. Ghost Wolf, a shield, healing gear and a planned escape make difficult quest pulls more reliable than chasing a single Windfury proc.

Dwarf totem unlocks

Dwarves have their own elemental class quests. Follow the current racial chain rather than travelling to a Horde quest giver. The current public walkthrough supplies these routes:

UnlockStart and practical route
Earth, level 4Teo Hammerstorm in Anvilmar. Bring 2 Iceclaw Bear Pendants from Frostmane Troll Whelps; use Earth Sapta at the Spirit Stone, speak to the manifestation, then return its Rough Quartz to Teo. The quest's prose calls them Frostmane pendants, but the objective item is Iceclaw Bear Pendant.
Fire, level 10Take Call of Fire from a trainer to Bruegs Kindleborn in eastern Dun Morogh, then Braldir Ashmantle in Loch Modan. Collect Fire Tar from Tunnel Rat Geomancers and a Reagent Pouch from Stonesplinter Seers; finish the Sapta/manifestation/brazier sequence and return the Torch of Eternal Flame to Bruegs. Some enemies reach 14, so group or return later if the route is unsafe.
Water, level 20Trainer introduction to Norric Lochthane in Loch Modan, then Hervdana Saegrund behind the Wetlands waterfall. Follow the waterskin trips to the Wetlands, Redridge and Astranaar, returning after each; finish the Water Sapta manifestation/shrine stage in Westfall, then return the Shard of Water to Norric.
Air, level 30Take the trainer's Call of Air to Veyric Thunderhame, called Thundervein in the quest text, at about 59.8, 27.6 in Arathi Highlands. The mountain path begins around 60.5, 35.2 near the Shards of Myzrael. Speak to him to complete this single-step unlock; his later elemental and weapon quests are separate.

Keep the earned elemental totems in your bags and train the spells they unlock. The full Dwarf walkthrough gives coordinates and terrain directions. These are current public-source routes, not our own playthrough; accept the actual trainer breadcrumbs and follow the current quest objectives.

For the separate Elemental Aid stage naming Charlga Razorflank, accept that stage before visiting Razorfen Kraul, then collect the Tattered Note after defeating her and check the objective before leaving. This dungeon task is not required for the single-step Call of Air unlock.

Endgame builds by role

Forever Restoration. Mindfulness enables Spirit regeneration while casting, Water Shield is available at 11 talent points, Mana Tide at 16 points, Nature's Swiftness at 21 points and Riptide at 31 points. Keep Water Shield active when its mana return is the purpose: incoming hits or your critical spells consume its charges to restore mana. It occupies the same Elemental Shield slot as Lightning Shield, so choose the needed effect and refresh its charges. Use Riptide for an instant heal and healing over time, then exploit its Chain Heal interaction when the group needs it.

At beta cap 30, heal with Healing Wave or the faster Lesser Healing Wave, learned at level 20, and use your allocated Nature's Swiftness for an emergency instant Nature heal. Chain Heal starts at level 40 and Riptide needs 31 talent points, so neither is part of the zero-Talented level-30 sequence. Later Chain Heal jumps between nearby party members when cast on a party member; it is not a full-raid heal.

Use mana cooldowns before you and your party's casters are empty, within the current totem's range. Nature's Swiftness plus a large heal is an emergency tool; casting it on a nearly full target wastes the safety margin. Coordinate Ancestral Spirit resurrection out of combat and keep Reincarnation's current reagent and cooldown requirements in mind.

Forever Elemental. Elemental Alacrity supports casting, with Earthbound at 16 talent points, Lava Burst at 21 points and Elemental Mastery as the 31-point cooldown. Lightning Overload adds extra casts. Maintain Flame Shock when its duration will pay off and use Lava Burst for its bonus against a Flame-Shocked target. Lightning Bolt is the normal filler; use Chain Lightning for useful additional targets or a suitable burst window. Elemental Mastery reduces Lightning Bolt and Lava Burst cast times and removes Chain Lightning's cooldown during its active window. Use that active casting window when setting up a burst sequence.

Forever Enhancement. Build around Stormstrike, Flurry, Spirit Weapons, Mental Quickness and Maelstrom Weapon. Stormstrike improves your own next Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning or Earth Shock, rather than every Shaman's spell; spend Maelstrom stacks on the accelerated or instant Lightning Bolt when the current ranks permit it. Keep the chosen weapon imbue active and use Rage of the Farseer during a window of sustained contact. Spirit Weapons changes threat according to Rockbiter use. Do not accidentally tank a boss with the threat-oriented imbue when assigned as damage.

Current Forever allocations

Choose a role below and open its checkpoint or full plan in the current Shaman calculator. Level-30 checkpoints spend 21 points; level-60 plans spend 51. The lists show every allocated rank.

These checkpoints and level ranges assume zero ranks in the Legacy Talented perk. Talented makes points available earlier, but the total remains capped at 51. Select your actual Talented rank in the calculator when using an earlier checkpoint. Follow the listed order; each number is additional points in that step, and omitted talents have zero points.

Enhancement melee leveling and damage: 0/31/20. One- or two-handed melee weapon as trained; no dual-wield talent is assumed. This includes full Maelstrom Weapon and supporting mana recovery rather than claiming a dual-wield build.

What to look for on gear

Enhancement wants a strong melee weapon, Strength or Attack Power, applicable hit and critical strike. Intellect has direct damage value through Forever's Mental Dexterity and Mental Quickness, while mana sustains shocks and utility. Elemental wants spell damage, applicable hit, critical strike and mana. Restoration wants healing power, Intellect, mana regeneration and Spirit when the build supports it.

Tidal Focus supplies up to 5% hit and 5% lower healing mana cost in the current tree. Count those ranks only when allocated. Merged hit itemization does not remove school immunity or establish one final equipment target for every melee and spell attack; check current target rules.

A damage set and healing set serve different jobs even if both contain Intellect. A shield is useful for survival while healing or casting; it is not a reason to give up a major spell-power upgrade without comparing the encounter and actual stats.

Current dungeon examples. Ring of Power Regulation from Relic Guardian in Excavation Site requires 28, with 3 mana per five seconds and up to 6 spell damage/healing for a caster or healing set. Slitherwrap Girdle from Mana Devourer in City of Dalaran also requires 28, with 9 Agility and 6 Stamina for an Enhancement comparison. Pick by the role you will actually perform rather than assuming the same item is best for all three trees.

Totems, consumables and group play

For early groups, current training gates are Cure Poison at level 16, Tremor Totem at level 18 and Cure Disease at level 22. Disease Cleansing Totem arrives at level 38, above the beta cap. Tremor removes fear, charm and sleep from nearby party members; it is not a universal magic dispel.

Other first-rank totem learning levels within beta cap are Strength of Earth at 10, Healing Stream at 20, Poison Cleansing at 22, Mana Spring at 26, Flametongue at 28 and Grounding at 30. Windfury Totem starts at level 32 and Grace of Air at level 42, so their raid-wide redesign does not make them level-30 tools. The personal Windfury Weapon imbue does start at level 30; it is a different spell.

Grounding redirects an eligible harmful spell aimed at a nearby party member, excludes area spells and is destroyed after the redirect under the current beta fix. Do not expect one placement to absorb repeated casts. Automatic cleansing also needs an assignment: a Poison or Disease Cleansing pulse can remove an effect that the encounter requires the player to carry.

Agree on party assignments before a raid. Keep the appropriate Strength, mana, healing or weapon-support totems within range of the players who need them, then move them as the fight moves. Grounding, Tremor and resistance totems solve specific problems; replacing the required one with a damage totem at the wrong moment can wipe the group.

Forever gives persistent buff totems five-minute durations, a one-second totem global cooldown, Call presets, Totemic Recall at level 20 and Totemic Projection at level 22. Recall destroys your active totems and refunds 25% of their casting mana; Projection moves them instead, costing 25% of base mana with a baseline one-minute cooldown that Elemental Reach can reduce. Blizzard's current beta notes mark the Recall refund bug fixed. Recall before a patrol reaches abandoned totems rather than leaving them to start another fight. Resistance totems and the four damage-support totems below are raid-wide within range. Mana Spring, Mana Tide and Healing Stream retain party-based effects in the current records; raid-wide damage buffs do not make every totem raid-wide.

Forever's weapon imbues last 60 minutes and can coexist with temporary weapon enchants. Strength of Earth, Grace of Air, Windfury and Flametongue Totems now affect the raid within range. Windfury and Flametongue are player buffs rather than weapon enchants, and remain mutually exclusive with each other. Grace of Air can now coexist with either; the one-totem-per-element placement limit still applies to each Shaman. A Shaman using Windfury Weapon does not gain the duplicate Windfury Totem benefit. Coordinate these raid buffs, then use party assignments for the mana and healing totems.

Carry water, healing or mana potions, appropriate food, bandages and current totem or Reincarnation reagents. Healers may use healing and mana-regeneration consumables, Elemental uses spell-damage supplies and Enhancement uses melee supplies. Confirm current Forever recipe and stacking rules before stocking a raid.

PvP and common mistakes

Use Earth Shock deliberately, purge valuable removable enemy buffs, and choose Grounding or Tremor when their effect matters more than a small damage buff. Save healing mana and use line of sight. A long Lightning Bolt cast in the open is an invitation for an interrupt; a melee build still needs to support allies rather than tunnel one target.

Do not use Rockbiter unintentionally in a raid damage role, overwrite your own necessary totem with another of the same element, leave totems behind a moving group, or assume Elemental Mastery guarantees a critical strike. Check weapon training, imbue, totem presets, healing set and interrupt access before the first pull.
