At a glance
Mage deals ranged spell damage through Arcane, Fire and Frost. You also supply food, water, portals, Arcane Intellect and reliable crowd control through Polymorph. No talent tree supplies a normal healing or tanking role.
Build examples use beta build 1.60.1.70425, snapshot 2026-10-16. This is public-source research, not an in-game test. The current beta cap is 30; level-60 allocations are higher-level plans. Without the Legacy Talented perk, class points begin at level 10. Dual Specialization unlocks at level 40. Visit a major-city class trainer to change talents.
Alliance Mages include Human, Gnome and Skyborne; Horde includes Undead, Troll and Orc. Compare current racial abilities with your intended content.
Leveling build
Starting plan. Frost keeps control and defensive tools but adds Ice Lance at 11 talent points, moves Ice Block to 16 points and Cold Snap to 21 points, and introduces Fingers of Frost for frozen-target interactions. Improved Blizzard's slow and Cone of Cold's duration have been reduced. Old videos showing long, low-risk dungeon pulls therefore do not establish a working Forever leveling route.
- Start at range with Frostbolt and use the slow to gain extra casts before the enemy reaches you.
- Use Frost Nova to make space, then move before casting again. Nova can break early when the target takes damage; leave an escape lane.
- Finish low-health targets with a wand or an efficient instant spell when that saves a longer cast and mana. Keep your Wands weapon skill current so a new wand can do its intended work. Wand shooting now requires half a second standing still, so continuous movement prevents the shot.
- Drink before the next dangerous pull. Keep a Mana Gem prepared, know the safe location for Evocation, and save a healing potion for an emergency that cannot wait for food.
- Polymorph a second enemy rather than turning every accidental pull into an area-damage test. Keep damage-over-time effects off the Polymorph target.
Fire is a valid questing alternative when you prefer faster direct hits and accept less control. Arcane becomes a more active Forever leveling option through Arcane Blast, Arcane Wrath and Missile Barrage. Choose a build around the content you can clear safely rather than an advertised experience-per-hour number from a different version.
Endgame builds by role
Forever Arcane. Arcane Blast at 11 points stacks additional Spell Damage based on Intellect while sharply increasing its own mana cost. Its current buff lasts 15 seconds from the first application, up to four stacks: another spell does not consume it, and later Blast casts do not restart that original timer. Build only the stack your mana can sustain, then use the remaining window for Arcane Wrath and useful Missile Barrage channels instead of rebuilding after every follow-up.
The October 16 snapshot puts the two-rank Missile Barrage in the first row and Arcane Wrath at 16 points, with Arcane Power as the deep cooldown. Arcane Wrath gains additional Spell Damage equal to 5% of your maximum Mana, so its scaling is tied to the size of the mana pool rather than the percentage currently remaining. Missile Barrage makes the next Arcane Missiles free and faster. Use Arcane Power for a 15-second damage window when you can also afford its increased mana cost; combining it with costly Blast stacks needs an actual mana budget. This is a mechanic-based starting priority, not a fixed simulated optimum.
Forever Fire. Maintain your own Improved Scorch effect if talented and worthwhile, cast Fireball or an appropriate Frostfire Bolt, and spend Heating Up stacks on the faster Pyroblast. Fire Blast adds a Heating Up charge even without a critical strike. Fire Power scales with your qualifying Fire effects: Ignite, Improved Scorch, Fireball, Pyroblast and Impact where allocated. Frostfire Bolt benefits from that bonus but does not add a qualifying effect itself. Combustion builds Fire critical-strike chance until three non-periodic Fire criticals; periodic critical ticks do not spend that three-crit allowance. Use it when you can keep landing Fire casts. Each Mage owns their own Ignite in Forever. Improved Scorch also benefits only the casting Mage, so neither debuff should be described as one Mage's raid-wide maintenance assignment.
Forever Frost and Frostfire. Frostbolt supplies the main ranged cast, with Ice Lance used on frozen targets or Fingers of Frost opportunities. Winter's Chill builds your own next Cone of Cold's damage, and that Cone consumes the stacks; it no longer supplies a critical-strike debuff. Build it with Frostbolt, Frost Blast or a Fingers of Frost-empowered Ice Lance, and use the empowered cone only when its short-range position is safe. The official notes give conflicting coefficients, so check the current client rather than budgeting a fixed multiplier.
With the later Arcane support points, Frostbolt can also trigger a free, faster Arcane Missiles channel; use that option only when you can safely finish it. Cold Snap resets the remaining cooldowns of your other Frost spells; spend it after a useful cooldown has been used, instead of while every Frost ability is already ready. Do not spam an unempowered Ice Lance into an unfrozen boss because it is instant.
Frostfire Bolt, learned at level 40, can benefit from both Fire and Frost talents. It uses the higher of your Fire or Frost spell-damage bonuses and the lower of the target's Fire or Frost resistances. Compare the resulting cast with your chosen tree's normal spell; benefiting from both schools does not make every mixed allocation effective.
Current Forever allocations
Choose a role below and open its checkpoint or full plan in the current Mage calculator. Level-30 checkpoints spend 21 points; level-60 plans spend 51. The lists show every allocated rank.
These checkpoints and level ranges assume zero ranks in the Legacy Talented perk. Talented makes points available earlier, but the total remains capped at 51. Select your actual Talented rank in the calculator when using an earlier checkpoint. Follow the listed order; each number is additional points in that step, and omitted talents have zero points.
Frost questing and control: 20/0/31. Single-target Frost foundation. A dedicated Blizzard grind setup needs a separate control allocation. Later Arcane points support mana, Missile Barrage procs and a secondary school; Arcane Focus does not improve Frost hit.

What to look for on gear
Spell damage or relevant school damage drives throughput; hit, critical strike and Intellect support it. Spirit and mana regeneration matter over long fights, especially with a talent or armor that permits regeneration while casting. A bigger mana bar is useful, but it does not make a low-damage item automatically better than a large spell-power upgrade.
Current Arcane Focus supplies up to 5% hit for Arcane spells, while Elemental Precision supplies up to 5% for Frost and Fire. Count only the talent that covers the spell you are casting. Hit does not overcome school immunity or every resistance effect, and current boss rules are needed before declaring a final gear cap.
Forever merges hit and critical-strike item stats across attack types. This does not establish identical caps for every attack. Caster weapons now grant spell damage and healing, so compare the actual weapon stats instead of carrying an old staff only for Intellect. Inspect current talents and boss rules before importing Classic's thresholds.
Current dungeon examples. Rath'mael in Ruins of Lordaeron drops Coldspire Staff, requiring level 19 with up to 32 Frost spell damage. That bonus supports Frost, not every school in an Arcane or Fire rotation. Shadetooth in Excavation Site drops Raptor's Gaze at level 26, with 4 Intellect, 4 Stamina and up to 8 spell damage/healing. It is an off-hand: compare a one-handed weapon plus the Gaze against a staff; you cannot equip both the Gaze and a two-handed staff.
Comprehension and untranslated scrolls
Comprehension is a Mage-only minor skill for deciphering untranslated scrolls found on creatures. Comprehend Scroll is listed at level 6; check your Mage trainer, then find it in the General spellbook tab. Keep an untranslated scroll, inspect its requirements and use Comprehend Scroll on an eligible one. The current public spell record confirms the level and deciphering action; it does not establish a guaranteed reward or a complete scroll-leveling route. Check the actual resulting scroll before using or buying more.
Consumables, utility and group play
Bring water, a prepared Mana Gem, mana and healing potions, caster food and reagents for group buffs and portals. Potential raid supplies include Brilliant Wizard Oil, school-appropriate elixirs, Flask of Supreme Power when justified, and Dark or Demonic Runes when available. Runes cost health: use them where the damage will not kill you or create an avoidable healer emergency. Confirm current Forever recipes and stacking rules before buying a full raid supply.
Train the utility that fits your group: the first Polymorph is learned at level 8, Remove Lesser Curse at level 18 and Counterspell at level 24. Frost Blast also starts at level 24: its quick, low-damage cast supplies a slow when a full Frostbolt cast is impractical. A Mage entering an earlier dungeon may have crowd control without yet having an interrupt.
Mark the assigned Polymorph target and agree on the pull timing with the tank. Polymorph works on Beasts, Humanoids and Critters, permits only one target per Mage, and breaks on damage. Its cast can start the pull; do not send the linked pack toward an unready group. Counterspell the dangerous school or cast, Remove Lesser Curse promptly when assigned. Slow Fall can save a fall, but needs its reagent unless a current perk removes that requirement.
Wait for tank threat before Flamestrike, Blizzard or Arcane Explosion. Ice Block can clear some dangerous effects and temporarily stop your attacks; it is not a promise that your enemies disappear. Watch where they go and let the tank recover. Blink can reposition you into another pack, so check the landing area before using it.
PvP and common mistakes
Frost control and defensive cooldowns are a useful PvP foundation. Choose damage or control talents for the opponents and group you expect. Keep distance, use Polymorph to create a healing or reset window, and save Counterspell for the cast or school that decides the exchange.
Do not break another player's crowd control with area damage, use Evocation where incoming damage will interrupt it, or assume every frozen-target bonus works on a boss that cannot be frozen. Fingers of Frost provides a specific exception through its own effect; an ordinary Frost Nova does not make an immune raid boss frozen.
