Alliance chain

At a glance

Forever planning status: Onyxia's Lair opens as a 40-player raid on 9 December 2026. The official 8 October Forever Podcast confirms that Onyxia attunement remains required for each character at launch. Plan the Drakefire Amulet chain below before raid night; its detailed quest requirements use the inherited Classic baseline and current database records, so check the live quest markers before each trip. Barrow Deeps and Hyjal Summit have different entry rules.

Inherited Classic baseline:

In original Classic, every player entering Onyxia's Lair needs a Drakefire Amulet in their bags. Equipping it is unnecessary, but leaving it in the bank prevents entry. Alliance and Horde have different long quest chains; both end with General Drakkisath in Upper Blackrock Spire.

Alliance can start at level 48; the note and later stages require level 50. Horde starts at level 55. Plan the BRD, LBRS and UBRS group steps for a suitably geared upper-50s group.

Steps in order: Alliance

1. Dragonkin Menace and The True Masters

Speak to Helendis Riverhorn at Morgan's Vigil, Burning Steppes. Accept Dragonkin Menace and kill 15 Black Broodlings, 10 Black Dragonspawn, 4 Black Wyrmkin and 1 Black Drake in the zone. The elite targets need a suitable group. Return to Helendis.

Follow The True Masters relay in order: Magistrate Solomon in Lakeshire, Bolvar in Stormwind Keep, Katrana Prestor, then Bolvar again, back to Solomon, then Marshal Maxwell at Morgan's Vigil. Speak to Ragged John at Flame Crest in northern Burning Steppes about Windsor and report to Maxwell. Read each hand-in before departing so you carry the next relay quest.

2. Find Windsor and complete Abandoned Hope

Take Marshal Windsor from Maxwell and enter Blackrock Depths with a five-player group. Locate Marshal Windsor in the prison. Open his cell with the Prison Cell Key from High Interrogator Gerstahn in the Detention Block, or bring someone who already holds that key. The Shadowforge Key serves different doors. Speak to him, take Abandoned Hope and report back to Maxwell at Morgan's Vigil.

3. Return for the note and lost information

At level 50 or above, after completing Abandoned Hope, kill eligible BRD enemies until A Crumpled Up Note drops. Use the note to start its quest and take it to Windsor in the prison. Do not farm for the note before its prerequisite or assume another player's drop starts your quest.

Take A Shred of Hope. Kill General Angerforge and Golem Lord Argelmach, loot the required information from both and return to Windsor. This route goes well beyond the prison; tell the group before starting.

4. Jail Break! and the Stormwind rendezvous

Take Jail Break! from Windsor only when all questing players are ready. Clear the nearby prison route first and stay with him through his equipment stop, prisoner conversations and ambushes. The escort is inside BRD.

After the escort succeeds, return to Marshal Maxwell and take Stormwind Rendezvous. Go to Stormwind's main entrance and speak to Squire Rowe, who calls Windsor. Wait for the event to be available if another player is already using it.

5. The Great Masquerade and The Dragon's Eye

Speak to Windsor and follow The Great Masquerade procession through Stormwind to the keep. Stay near the event and let the allied NPCs handle the dangerous reveal fight. Afterward, speak to Bolvar and accept The Dragon's Eye.

Travel to Mazthoril in Winterspring. Use the teleport rune deep inside the blue-dragon cave to reach Haleh above it. Bring help or arrange a safe path through the elites; Haleh is not on the ordinary Everlook road.

6. The final UBRS kill

Haleh gives Drakefire Amulet. Kill General Drakkisath at the end of UBRS, loot Blood of the Black Dragon Champion with the quest active, then return to Haleh in Winterspring. Check that the finished Drakefire Amulet is in your bags.

Steps in order: Horde

1. Warlord's Command

Speak to Warlord Goretooth in Kargath, Badlands. Use his conversation or supplied command item to obtain Warlord's Command, then form an LBRS party. Kill Highlord Omokk, War Master Voone and Overlord Wyrmthalak. Find and loot Important Blackrock Documents, which can appear at the relevant boss areas. Check every player's document objective before leaving: boss kills alone are insufficient. Return to Goretooth.

2. Eitrigg, Thrall and Rend

Take Eitrigg's Wisdom to Eitrigg in Grommash Hold, Orgrimmar, speak to him and then report to Thrall. Take For the Horde!, kill Warchief Rend Blackhand in UBRS, loot his head and return to Thrall.

Complete What the Wind Carries by listening to Thrall. Then take The Champion of the Horde to Rexxar, who patrols the main road through Desolace with Misha. He travels over a long route toward the Feralas border, so ask for a recent sighting rather than waiting at one assumed fixed coordinate.

3. Myranda and the disguise

Rexxar sends you through The Mistress of Deception to Myranda the Hag, near Uther's Tomb in Western Plaguelands. Take Oculus Illusions, collect 20 Black Dragonspawn Eyes in UBRS, then return to Myranda.

Take Emberstrife and the Amulet of Draconic Subversion to Emberstrife's cave in southern Dustwallow Marsh, around 56, 88. Use the disguise away from enemies, approach safely and speak to Emberstrife. This is a conversation step, not the Seal of Ascension forging fight. Preserve the disguise item for return visits.

4. The Test of Skulls

Accept the first three skull tests before traveling. Bring a group and loot each quest skull:

TargetLocation
ChronalisCaverns of Time entrance, Tanaris
ScryerBlue-dragon cave area in Winterspring
SomnusPatrols the southern Swamp of Sorrows

Return these three skulls to Emberstrife in disguise. Only then take The Test of Skulls, Axtroz. Kill Axtroz near Grim Batol in Wetlands, loot his skull and return to Emberstrife again. All four tests are not available on the first visit.

5. Ascension and the final UBRS kill

Take Ascension... and the Dull Drakefire Amulet to Rexxar in Desolace. He gives Blood of the Black Dragon Champion. Kill General Drakkisath in UBRS, loot his blood with the quest active and return to Rexxar for the finished Drakefire Amulet.

Plan the dungeon visits

ObjectiveDungeonCombine it with
Alliance Windsor prison, note, information and escortBRDMolten Core's Core Fragment if the group also plans the deep route
Horde three leaders and documentsLBRSSeal of Ascension gemstone farming
Horde Rend's head, then a later dragon-eye objectiveUBRSOther players' UBRS loot and attunement work, while respecting the chain order
Both factions' final Drakkisath bloodUBRSBlackhand's Command brand for BWL and Eye of the Emberseer if active

General Drakkisath drops a limited 2 to 4 Blood of the Black Dragon Champion in the original Classic baseline. Agree who receives it before the kill; a large group of questers may need more than one run. Check each recipient's bags before leaving.

Most early dungeon steps need a five-player party for quest credit. UBRS is the ten-player exception in this baseline. Do not convert an LBRS or BRD quest party to a raid merely to add an extra helper without checking whether its quest objectives still credit.

If something goes wrong

  • Alliance note will not drop: finish Abandoned Hope first, then farm eligible BRD enemies with room in the quest log and bags.
  • Jail Break! fails: recover the group, clear the route and wait for Windsor's reset. Every participant should accept before anyone starts moving him.
  • Stormwind event is busy: wait for the existing procession to finish, then use Rowe or Windsor when the next event is available.
  • Emberstrife attacks a Horde quester: retreat and apply the supplied disguise before approaching again. Do not complete a different Emberstrife quest by killing your conversation target.
  • Drakkisath blood is missing: check that the final blood quest is active and that you personally looted the boss before leaving. If the available blood went to other questers, arrange another kill.
  • Onyxia portal refuses entry: put the completed Drakefire Amulet in this character's bags. Another member's amulet does not admit you.

Tips

Start before the raid date. Travel, repeated dungeon prerequisites and group escorts make this chain take longer than its final boss kill. Record your current quest name between sessions. Keep the completed amulet permanently and check for it during the raid's ready check.
