At a glance
Forever planning status: Molten Core's release and entry rules have not been confirmed for WoW: Forever. Use this guide to prepare for possible shortcut work, with the original Classic quest chain as an inherited baseline. Confirm the live quest and portal before committing a group to the route.
Inherited Classic baseline:
Attunement to the Core is a one-time personal shortcut quest available from level 55. Lothos Riftwaker stands inside Blackrock Mountain, between Searing Gorge and Burning Steppes, at the lower end of the route down the chains toward Blackrock Depths. Complete it once and he can send that character directly into Molten Core.
The quest is optional for physical entry: an unattuned player can reach the raid portal through Blackrock Depths. It is useful for every regular raider, and separate from the Hydraxian Waterlords rune-dousing chain. Both factions follow the same steps.
Steps in order
- Accept before entering BRD. Speak to Lothos Riftwaker outside the dungeon and accept Attunement to the Core. Check the quest log, not just the gossip dialogue. Being summoned into Blackrock Depths first does not put the quest in your log.
- Arrange a five-player BRD group. Tell the group you need the Molten Core portal route rather than an early prison-only run. A normal route proceeds deep into the dungeon toward the Black Forge and the bridge to the raid portal. If your route uses locked shortcuts, confirm someone has the Shadowforge Key or another valid opening method.
- Loot the Core Fragment. Inside BRD, reach the Molten Core portal beyond the Black Forge area. Interact with the Core Fragment beside the portal. Each questing player must collect their own fragment; another party member clicking it does not finish yours. You do not need to fight a Molten Core boss or cross into the raid.
- Return to Lothos. Leave BRD and return to the same NPC in Blackrock Mountain. Hand in the quest and verify that the fragment objective is complete before leaving the area.
- Use the shortcut. In a raid group when entering the raid, speak to Lothos and choose his Molten Core teleport. No physical key needs to remain in your bags after completion.
Choosing the route
A full dungeon route is safer for a new group and can overlap BRD loot or Alliance Onyxia-chain objectives. A lava run saves clearing time but includes dangerous swimming, ledges and awkward recovery if someone dies. Agree on the route before the pull; carry healing and fire protection if you deliberately choose the lava route. It is not a requirement of the attunement.
Do not follow another player into lava without knowing the landing point. A failed skip can cost longer than clearing the normal route. Reaching the fragment with a guide who knows the dungeon is enough; no quest-specific boss kill is required.
If something goes wrong
- No fragment objective: confirm you accepted the quest from Lothos and are at the fragment inside BRD, not the outside teleporter.
- Someone dies on the approach: recover the group before crossing the raid portal. The surviving player's fragment does not complete the dead player's objective.
- Lothos has no teleport option: finish the turn-in on that character. Reputation with the Hydraxian Waterlords is unrelated.
- Attuned on an alt: repeat the quest on this character. The flag is not account-wide in Classic.
Tips
Pick up the quest whenever you first plan a deep BRD run at level 55 or above. Combine the travel with other Blackrock Mountain errands, but do not confuse this BRD quest with Blackwing Lair's UBRS objective. Your raid still needs the separate seven-rune plan to reach Majordomo and Ragnaros inside Molten Core.
