Blackwing Lair
Prepare Blackwing Lair for Forever with eight inherited encounter plans, role assignments and the release and mechanics still to verify.

At a glance
Forever planning status: Blackwing Lair has no confirmed release or final rules in the WoW: Forever sources checked. Use these inherited Classic encounter plans to organize possible future progression. Raid size, access, resets, tuning and loot still need Forever confirmation before the encounter plan is used live. Confirmed Forever class changes are noted separately; a class having a control spell does not establish that it works on every inherited raid target.
Inherited Classic baseline:
Blackwing Lair is a level 60, 40-player raid in Blackrock Mountain, between Searing Gorge and Burning Steppes. Its eight encounters are Razorgore, Vaelastrasz, Broodlord, Firemaw, Ebonroc, Flamegor, Chromaggus and Nefarian. Complete Blackhand's Command for the outside Orb of Command shortcut; the slower physical entrance is inside Upper Blackrock Spire after Rend's arena. See the separate Blackwing Lair attunement guide.
Season of Mastery additions, Season of Discovery modes and later expansion mechanics are not the baseline below. Classic's raid save resets weekly: agree the instance save and roster before killing a boss.
Before you go
Plan three or more capable tanks, an assigned healing team, two Hunters who can alternate Tranquilizing Shot, and coverage for magic, curse, poison and disease removal. Exact healer count depends on gear and execution; do not sacrifice the needed dispel coverage for a damage ranking.
Every raider should bring and equip an Onyxia Scale Cloak for Nefarian. Tanks also use it against the three drakes' Shadow Flame. The cloak blocks the dangerous lingering Shadowflame effect; fire resistance and a protection potion are not substitutes. Healers still need to cover the initial breath damage.
Bring Greater Fire Protection Potions, mana and healing potions, repairs and normal role consumables. Fire resistance is especially useful for Firemaw tanks, but do not put the whole raid into weak resistance gear for every encounter. Collect Hourglass Sand from the earlier trash and distribute it before Chromaggus, prioritizing tanks and essential healers. Hunters need a spare ranged weapon for Nefarian.
Arrange the cloak supply before the first drake attempt. In the inherited recipe, a Leatherworker with 300 skill learns it through The Journey Has Just Begun after their own Onyxia head turn-in. Each cloak uses 1 Scale of Onyxia, 1 Cindercloth Cloak and 1 Rune Thread, and binds on equip: raid members can buy or commission it. Onyxia requires an effective 315 Skinning for the scales in this baseline; the Onyxia guide explains the corpse and recipe assignments.
Forever preparation: The developers confirm continued access to Classic consumables. Check current item tooltips and stacking rules when preparing them. Traditional world-buff use inside raids still needs policy confirmation; do not require a collection circuit or count those effects in your guaranteed raid budget.
Threat buffs: If your roster includes a Paladin, assign Salvation by job: its current Forever effect reduces generated threat by 30%. Mass Salvation affects the target's whole class. Check both tank and backup-tank buffs, then have the Paladin use Revoke to remove Salvation from those tanks before pulling. See the Paladin guide for current utility.
The route and trash
Clear Razorgore's room deliberately before using the orb. Between Vaelastrasz and Broodlord, move together through the Suppression Room. Assign stealthed Rogues to disarm suppression devices and keep them from immediately reactivating around the raid. Tanks gather whelps and patrols; AoE kills controlled packs. Preserve healer mana for Broodlord at the end.
After Broodlord, clear the drake patrol route and nearby packs before pulling Firemaw. On spell-sensitive trash such as Death Talon Wyrmguards, react to the current vulnerability rather than assuming every school works equally well. Do not chase a fleeing player into the next pack. Confirm cloak equipment and repair status before the drakes and final balcony.
Razorgore the Untamed
Egg phase: assign a two-controller rotation and a backup. Kill the guards around the Orb of Domination, then control Razorgore and use Destroy Egg on the room's eggs. Protect both the controller and Razorgore: killing him before all eggs are destroyed fails the encounter. The eggs are objectives, not a timer that makes them hatch into extra waves. Control lasts up to 90 seconds and Mind Exhaustion prevents immediate reuse for one minute; call the handover before control ends. Assign a tank to destroy the final egg, because the last controller becomes the first boss target in phase 2.
Tanks gather the spawning defenders by assigned areas. Kill dangerous casters promptly. Mages can Polymorph the humanoid Blackwing Mages and Legionnaires; Druids can Hibernate the Death Talon Dragonspawn. Keep marked controls out of cleave and kite remaining adds when the assigned tanks need relief. Healers stay within their assignments rather than drawing every spawn toward the orb. The controller keeps destroying eggs and calls any lost control immediately.
Boss phase: after all 30 eggs are gone, adds leave and Razorgore becomes the kill target. He is taunt-immune. Two tanks stay high on threat so Conflagration does not send him into healers; do not expect an emergency taunt to rescue a non-tank final controller. Use the room's cover against Fireball Volley where practical, while keeping the tanks healable.
Wipe and recovery: losing the orb, killing Razorgore early or letting defenders overwhelm the controller ends the attempt. Reset fully, reassign the weak corner and restart with a fresh controller plan.
Vaelastrasz the Corrupt
Finish assignments before starting his dialogue. Essence of the Red gives exceptional resource regeneration for a limited time. Tank him facing away from the raid; melee use the flanks and avoid both the frontal breath and tail.
Burning Adrenaline affects mana users as well as the current tank. A marked player moves to the assigned empty area before the fatal explosion. Vaelastrasz is taunt-immune. Set a tank threat succession in advance: the next tank must already be high on threat when the current one dies.
Healers cover constant raid damage and the active tank. Damage dealers use the resource buff aggressively while respecting the next tank's threat. Marked casters can use the enhanced casting window from a safe location before they die.
Wipe and recovery: one marked player exploding in the raid or an unprepared tank death can collapse the attempt. Check who failed to move or who was next on threat before repeating the pull.
Broodlord Lashlayer
Finish the approach together and pull into the agreed corner with tank backs against the wall. Keep multiple tanks high on threat: Knock Away reduces the active tank's threat, and the boss is not a simple taunt-rotation fight.
Mortal Strike cuts healing received while active; it is not an indefinitely stacking debuff. Tank healers anticipate it and the heavy melee burst. Melee move out or use the nearby corner for Blast Wave as called, then return without crossing the front. Keep suppression devices controlled and finish any approach trash safely.
Wipe and recovery: threat overtakes after Knock Away and a Mortal Strike burst are the main dangers. Recover the gauntlet route as a group after a wipe; do not send isolated healers ahead.
Firemaw
Position him at a corner so the raid can break line of sight without hiding the active tank from every healer. Only the tanks stand in front, with Onyxia Scale Cloaks equipped. Flame Buffet stacks fire damage on everyone in line of sight, not just the tank.
Damage dealers step behind cover around five or six stacks, or earlier if healing is strained, and wait until the debuff actually expires. Healers rotate their own resets so at least one assigned team can always see the tank. Tanks coordinate taunts around Wing Buffet and their stack resets, preserving the boss's facing.
Wipe and recovery: every healer hiding together, or a player returning before their stacks fall, causes preventable deaths. Fix the corner and healer sight lines before changing the raid's gear plan.
Ebonroc
Use the same frontal-breath and cloak discipline. Shadow of Ebonroc on the active tank heals the boss when that tank is struck. Another tank taunts immediately so the marked tank stops receiving melee hits. Keep a further taunt available for Wing Buffet or a resisted taunt.
Damage dealers stay below the tank threat lead; healers continue through the swap without following tanks into the breath cone.
Wipe and recovery: a marked tank continuing to be hit produces repeated boss healing. Identify the missed or resisted taunt and assign a backup, rather than treating the resulting long fight as a damage problem.
Flamegor
Face him away from the raid with the drake tanks in their cloak sets. Rotate tanks for Wing Buffet. Hunters alternate Tranquilizing Shot on Frenzy, which increases damage and causes dangerous fire damage while it remains active. A backup Hunter fires if the first shot misses.
Wipe and recovery: untreated Frenzy overwhelms healing. Check the shot rotation, hit chance and range before the next pull.
Chromaggus
Position him beside cover. Each instance save selects two breath types from a pool of five. Identify the pair before settling the pull plan. Avoid damaging breaths by breaking line of sight. Time Lapse is the exception: the main tank and damage dealers take it together to keep their threat reduction aligned; the designated off tank and a small healer team hide, then pick up the boss while the exposed players are stunned. That off tank must build a threat lead over the unexposed players before the breath; hiding with no threat does not create a reliable handover.
Damage dealers match the current Shimmer's magic-school vulnerability while the tank keeps the same positioning. Remove Brood Afflictions continuously: Black is a curse, Blue magic, Green poison and Red disease. Bronze causes stuns and requires Hourglass Sand. All five at once mutate a player, so do not let the removable four accumulate while saving sand.
Hunters remove Frenzy. Healers and tanks prepare for his low-health damage increase and avoid changing the boss's facing during a sight-line reset.
Wipe and recovery: a Time Lapse plan copied from a non-Time Lapse week can put a damage dealer above both tanks. Call the actual breaths and sand supply before each attempt.
Nefarian
Phase 1: the two doors
Before speaking to Victor Nefarius, split tanks, healers and damage between both spawn doors. The save selects two ordinary Drakonid colors; assign damage for their actual resistances rather than send one damage school blindly into both sides.
| Drakonid | Resistance and response |
|---|---|
| Blue | Frost resistance and mana drain; prioritize the threat to mana users |
| Black | Fire and Shadow resistance; use physical damage or other schools |
| Red | Fire resistance and nearby fire damage; use suitable controlled AoE |
| Bronze | Arcane resistance and attack/cast slowing; adjust schools and keep tanks supported |
| Green | Nature resistance and stuns; keep the tank covered while controlled damage finishes them |
| Chromatic | High magic resistance and stronger health; tank firmly and prioritize physical damage |
Keep corpses in predictable piles for the later resurrection. After 42 Drakonids die, Nefarian lands; kill any remaining adds under control. Everyone must already have an Onyxia Scale Cloak equipped.
Phase 2: dragon and class calls
Face him away from the raid. Keep the tank protected against fear, have Mages or Druids remove the Veil of Shadow curse promptly and leave space around the frontal breath and tail. Prepare the inherited responses below for the classes actually in your roster. Forever has Horde Undead Paladins and Alliance Dwarf Shamans, so faction alone does not exclude either class. All nine calls belong in the plan; their final Forever triggers and interactions with new abilities still require encounter verification.
| Class called | Response |
|---|---|
| Warrior | Forced Berserker Stance increases tank damage taken and weakens threat. Use Last Stand if talented, external protection and extra healing. Shield Wall requires Defensive Stance and cannot be cast while locked in Berserker; restore the correct stance afterward |
| Druid | Forced Cat Form; arrange alternate healing or tank coverage |
| Priest | Stop direct heals that apply Corrupted Healing; Renew and Power Word: Shield are usable under the inherited mechanic. Other healers cover the direct-healing gap |
| Hunter | Ranged weapon durability is destroyed; equip the prepared spare after the call |
| Rogue | Teleported to the boss's front and held there; the tank turns the breath away from the trapped Rogues |
| Mage | Uncontrolled polymorphs affect allies; dispellers recover key players |
| Warlock | Infernals appear; off tanks gather them and the raid kills them with non-Fire damage |
| Paladin | Nefarian gains physical protection. Casters can continue appropriate magic damage, but watch threat while physical tanks cannot generate it normally |
| Shaman | Hostile totems appear; kill them promptly |
Phase 3: 20% health
The dead drakonids rise as Bone Constructs. Off tanks collect them, Mages and other AoE classes kill the piles, and healers support those tanks. Continue the dragon and class-call mechanics while clearing them. Do not let the add wave erase the main tank's healing coverage.
Wipe and recovery: unprotected Shadowflame, a mishandled tank class call and loose Bone Constructs are distinct failures. Fix the specific assignment, wait for the event to reset and rebuild both door groups before starting again.
Loot highlights
BWL supplies six Tier 2 armor slots: Razorgore's bracers, Vaelastrasz's belts, Broodlord's boots, the drakes' gloves, Chromaggus's shoulders and Nefarian's chests. Onyxia supplies Tier 2 helms and Ragnaros the legs in this baseline.
Examples worth planning around include Drake Fang Talisman from Ebonroc, Rejuvenating Gem from the drakes, Ashjre'thul from Chromaggus and Neltharion's Tear or Ashkandi from Nefarian. Discuss allocation before the pull. Blackwing Technicians supply Elementium Ore for the Thunderfury crafting chain, with separate smelting and material requirements. A boss kill does not guarantee a specific rare item.
