Skinning Leveling Guide, 1 to 300
A Forever Skinning plan with inherited skill formulas and routes, trainer checks, leather and hide planning, tools and current corpse rules.

In this guide
At a glance
Skinning gathers leather, hides and specialist scales from eligible corpses. It uses a primary profession slot and pairs with Leatherworking. Keep a Skinning Knife in your bags; an ordinary knife does not need equipping. Some specialist weapons act as a knife and add skill, but their bonus may require equipping them.
Use this Skinning planning route in Forever. Current item records confirm the starter training book, Scarce materials and camp effects below. The ordinary-beast formulas, higher trainer gates and zone loops use inherited reference data where current beta evidence is missing; check the actual corpse tooltip and trainer. This is public-source research, not our own game test.
Start with the new training book when offered. Pelt Collecting for Beginners is a bind-on-pickup, Unique starter quest reward. Its current item effect teaches Skinning if you have a free primary-profession slot, then adds two skill up to 15. Current quest rewards include A Humble Task in Mulgore and The Woodland Protector in Teldrassil. It does not replace the knife, teach higher ranks or allow a third primary profession. Choose the gathering book you actually intend to use.
| Rank | Inherited rank gate and cap |
|---|---|
| Apprentice | Cap 75; the new starter book can teach the skill; check a trainer's current level gate if learning there |
| Journeyman | Skill 50; cap 150 |
| Expert | Skill 125 and character level 10; cap 225 |
| Artisan | Skill 200 and character level 25; cap 300 |
Balthus Stoneflayer in Ironforge is an Alliance option for the full route. Horde can start with Thuwd in Orgrimmar and train Expert through Dranh at Camp Taurajo; Kulleg Stonehorn at Camp Mojache in Feralas is the Classic Artisan destination used here. Do not assume an early Horde capital trainer teaches Artisan. Check current Forever rank access before making the long trip.
What you can skin
A corpse must be eligible for Skinning and normally fully looted under the inherited rules. Not every creature with an animal-looking model is skinnable. Current Forever profession reporting confirms that starting-area creatures can now be skinned; do not leave the starting zone merely because the old route excluded its beasts. Inspect the actual corpse tooltip rather than treating every failed attempt as insufficient skill.
For ordinary Classic beasts, the common skill rule is:
- Below 100 skill, maximum skinnable creature level is the whole-number part of skill divided by 10, plus 10.
- At 100 and above, maximum level is the whole-number part of skill divided by 5.
Examples: skill 50 permits an ordinary level-15 beast; 155 permits level 31; 205 permits level 41; 280 permits level 56. Special raid creatures can have additional effective-skill requirements, so this is not a promise that every level-60 boss is skinnable at 300.
Orange Skinning does not guarantee a skill point on every corpse. Creature level, skill color and randomness mean there is no dependable fixed number of kills to 300. Do not buy a precise "leather shopping list" for a gathering route.
The route by skill range
Use enemies appropriate to both your profession skill and your character's combat strength. A level-25 character may train Artisan but cannot safely farm level-50 beasts alone merely because the rank is unlocked.
| Skill | Practical route | What to check before moving |
|---|---|---|
| 1-75 | Begin with eligible starting-zone beasts, then Horde beasts between Sen'jin Village and Orgrimmar, or Alliance beasts around Dun Morogh's accessible lakes and roads toward Loch Modan | Use the starter book or trainer, carry a knife and train Journeyman at 50 or before the 75 cap |
| 75-125 | Barrens toward Camp Taurajo, or Loch Modan and lower-level Wetlands beasts | Keep skinning relevant beasts while travelling, then learn Expert at 125 |
| 125-165 | Continue Barrens or Wetlands, using beasts within your level limit | Reach 155 before relying on level-31 Arathi raptors |
| 165-205 | Thousand Needles or Arathi Highlands | Higher raptors require higher skill: level 36 needs 180, level 37 needs 185 |
| 205-230 | Feralas beasts in safe areas away from hostile faction guards | Train Artisan first; a 225 cap would otherwise waste kills |
| 230-260 | Lower-level Feralas yetis or accessible hippogryphs | Check actual mob levels; caves can trap you with respawns |
| 260-280 | Higher-level Feralas beasts or yetis when your character can handle them | Switch from gray corpses to relevant levels instead of clearing the same low cave forever |
| 280-300 | Un'Goro beasts or still-relevant higher Feralas beasts | Watch elite patrols and finish on ordinary safe beasts when possible |
You do not need to kill devilsaurs to finish the final points. Their level and elite difficulty make them a separate specialist farm. Ordinary dinosaurs and other suitable beasts provide a safer route for an undergeared character.
Leather tiers and specialist materials
Low-level beasts tend to yield scraps and Light Leather; progressively higher levels supply Medium, Heavy, Thick and Rugged Leather. The ranges overlap and hides are chance drops, so one corpse's creature level does not promise an exact leather type. Keep hides if your Leatherworking route uses curing steps; selling them can force a more expensive leather-only alternative later.
Devilsaur Leather from Un'Goro, Core Leather from relevant Molten Core creatures, Scale of Onyxia and Dreamscale are specialist materials with their own targets and requirements. They are not ordinary Rugged Leather alternatives in the 1-300 route. Check the skinning skill and raid permission before assuming you may skin a guild's boss for personal profit.
The Scale of Onyxia is tied to skinning Onyxia rather than a random outdoor dragon. The inherited preparation threshold is 315 effective Skinning, including valid equipped bonuses; trained 300 alone is insufficient. Confirm the actual Forever corpse requirement and tool availability before committing the raid's skinning assignment. Access, raid schedule and skill equipment matter more than a generic zone loop. The Onyxia guide connects the scale to later cloak preparation; a specialty-material name does not guarantee a particular yield.
Skill bonuses and tools
Enchant Gloves, Skinning adds 5 effective skill. Above the ordinary 100-skill boundary, that can permit one additional creature level, but it does not increase your trained base skill or unlock a new rank. Inherited high-level tool leads are Pip's Skinner (called Finkle's Skinner in older references) from The Beast in Upper Blackrock Spire and Zulian Slicer from Zul'Gurub. Those references provide equipped skill bonuses, but current Forever availability is not established here. Confirm the current item, weapon and class restrictions before planning a special raid corpse around them.
For high-requirement raid corpses, add the equipped bonuses and enchant to base skill, then confirm the creature's requirement. Merely carrying a bonus weapon may satisfy the knife tool function without applying the equipped skill bonus. Keep a normal knife if you are uncertain about the current item's tool behavior.
Etiquette, Forever checks and tips
Loot your kills completely before skinning, and wait for a nearby skinner who clearly killed a creature for their own materials. A corpse being technically available does not make racing a party member to it useful. If the loot window is still occupied or contains items, resolve that before troubleshooting your profession skill.
Current Forever item records identify Pristine Leather, Pristine Hide and Pristine Scale as Scarce crafting reagents. Keep them apart from ordinary leather-tier planning. For example, the current Bottomless Bag recipe uses 5 Pristine Hide and 5 Pristine Scale in addition to its cloth, Mooncloth, shards, dye and thread. A Scarce tag does not establish a fixed drop chance, a guaranteed corpse yield or the exact creature-level boundary for each reagent.
Each creature can be skinned only once before disappearing under the October 15 beta rules. Gather while questing when the beasts remain relevant. Check knife, rank cap, corpse eligibility, effective skill and bag space before making a special farming trip. A quieter ordinary-beast route can be better than competing for one famous elite spawn.
In Forever, Bountiful Harvest increases specifically Scarce materials from Mining, Herbalism and Skinning in the current public data. It is not a promise to double every ordinary herb, ore or leather drop. Working Overtime separately affects skill-up chance; neither supplies a fixed number of nodes or corpses to 300.
Skinning camp features
At Skinning 20, the Camp Chair gives you and other players sitting nearby 2% increased critical-strike chance with all spells and attacks. It is mutually exclusive with Moonkin Aura. Its current crafting bill is 3 Light Leather and 2 Simple Wood per action. Keep those materials if you want the first Skinning camp feature rather than selling every early leather stack.
At Skinning 140, the Field Guide lets players read it for Track Beasts and retains the Chair's benefits. Tracking reveals relevant creatures; it does not prove that a particular corpse is skinnable or increase your effective Skinning skill. This camp object and the similarly named Legacy cooldown perk are different things.
Both need a nearby campfire and share the one-hour camping-feature cooldown before applicable Legacy reductions. Higher features require the actual blueprint as well as skill. Use the camping guide for unlock quests, higher-tier Trapper's Workbench planning and blueprint sources. Do not assume placing another Chair supplies a second stacking critical-strike buff.
