At a glance
Mining supplies ore, stone, gems and smelted bars. It uses a primary profession slot and pairs naturally with Blacksmithing or Engineering. Carry a Mining Pick in your bags; it does not need to be equipped. Smelting uses a forge, not merely a nearby anvil, and each smelting recipe has its own requirement.
Use this Mining planning route in Forever. Current Forever object tooltips confirm the vein skill requirements below. The smelting colors below also use current recipe records. Trainer gates, geographic loops and Dark Iron access remain inherited planning where current evidence is missing; live spawns are not verified here. This is public-source research, not our own game test.
Start with Mining for Dummies when offered. This bind-on-pickup, Unique starter reward can teach Mining if you have an open primary-profession slot, then adds two skill up to 15. Current reward records include A Humble Task in Mulgore and The Woodland Protector in Teldrassil. It does not replace your pick, teach later ranks or permit a third primary profession.
| Rank | Inherited rank gate and cap |
|---|---|
| Apprentice | Cap 75; the new starter book can teach the skill; check the current level gate if learning from a trainer |
| Journeyman | Skill 50; cap 150 |
| Expert | Skill 125 and character level 10; cap 225 |
| Artisan | Skill 200 and character level 25; cap 300 |
Ordinary Mining trainers teach the ranks you qualify for. Alliance options include Gelman Stonehand in Stormwind and Geofram Bouldertoe in Ironforge; Horde options include Makaru in Orgrimmar, Brom Killian in Undercity and Brek Stonehoof in Thunder Bluff. Pikkle in Gadgetzan serves both factions. These gathering rank gates differ from crafting professions; check the current Forever trainer before planning a low-level gathering alt.
Veins and smelting requirements
The gathering column matches current Forever object tooltips. A matching database record confirms its listed skill gate, not the availability of a live spawn. Smelting has separate recipe-learning gates.
| Resource | Current database Mining requirement | Inherited smelting lead |
|---|---|---|
| Copper | 1 | Smelt Copper from 1 |
| Tin | 65 | Smelt Tin and Bronze from the appropriate early rank; Bronze uses Copper and Tin bars |
| Silver | 75 | Smelt Silver from 75 |
| Iron | 125 | Smelt Iron from 125; Steel also consumes Coal |
| Gold | 155 | Smelt Gold learning is reported at 155 or 170 in conflicting current listings; check the trainer |
| Mithril | 175 | Smelt Mithril from 175 |
| Truesilver | 230 | Smelt Truesilver is a later recipe, not available as soon as Mithril |
| Dark Iron | 230 | Special smelting unlock and forge described below |
| Small Thorium | 245 | Smelt Thorium is learned at 250, so mining and smelting gates differ |
| Rich Thorium | 275 | A separate vein requirement; 250 is not enough |
Forever adds starter alternatives at Mining 1: Poor Copper Veins and Teldrassil's Chunk of Amber and Large Chunk of Amber. The current Amber records list Copper Ore among their loot, so Night Elves can begin Mining on Teldrassil instead of being required to leave for their first ore. Darkshore remains an alternative when you want an ordinary Copper route. Current beta notes reduce Poor Copper density; no starter loop guarantees a fixed supply.
A skill requirement is not an ore-per-point formula. Yellow and green mining can fail to give a skill point, and an individual vein can have multiple gathers. A fixed promise such as "160 veins from 250 to 300" cannot be reliable under changing skill colors and competition.
The route by skill range
| Skill | Practical route | Bridge and safety checks |
|---|---|---|
| 1-65 | Accessible starting terrain in Dun Morogh, Elwynn, Durotar, Mulgore, Tirisfal or Zephras Isle; Teldrassil has Amber nodes | Gather Copper or starter alternatives while questing; use Darkshore if you prefer an ordinary Copper loop |
| 65-125 | Barrens or Thousand Needles for Horde; Loch Modan, Redridge or Wetlands for Alliance | Tin and remaining Copper, with Silver at 75; train Journeyman first |
| 125-175 | Arathi Highlands, Thousand Needles, Desolace or Badlands when safe | Iron, remaining Tin and occasional Gold from 155; train Expert before passing 150 |
| 175-230 | Tanaris, Hinterlands, Searing Gorge or suitable lower-risk Mithril loops | Mithril remains the main target; do not chase Truesilver before 230 |
| 230-245 | Continue a useful Mithril route with Truesilver stops | Train Artisan before the 225 cap, or earlier from 200 when eligible |
| 245-275 | Un'Goro, Felwood or Burning Steppes when your character can handle the enemies | Small Thorium bridges toward Rich Thorium; learn Smelt Thorium from 250 |
| 275-300 | Un'Goro, Winterspring, Burning Steppes or Plaguelands | Rich and Small Thorium, with any still-relevant Mithril; skip elite or hostile caves you cannot clear safely |
Ride an outer terrain loop, checking accessible slopes and caves where nodes occur. A high-level character can include caves; a lower-level miner should often skip them. Do not describe Un'Goro as free of dangerous elites: devilsaurs patrol and some regions are hazardous. Avoid settlement guards of the other faction and leave room to disengage before gathering.
If every node is already gone, change the loop or zone. Waiting at one spawn can be slower than gathering a less fashionable ore that still gives skill.
Smelting as an alternative
Learn new smelts when you train, then check their current color before buying ore. Forever changes several of these thresholds: Steel, Mithril, Truesilver and ordinary Thorium are already gray at their learning gates in current recipe records. They produce needed bars but do not extend a smelting skill-up route.
| Smelt | Current gray skill | Practical limit |
|---|---|---|
| Copper | 70 | Early option; later crafts can need extra attempts |
| Bronze | 115 | Uses Copper Bars and Tin Bars, not raw ore |
| Silver | 125 | Can bridge to the Iron learning gate if the ore is available |
| Iron | 140 | Stops before the reported Gold learning gates; gather to cover the gap |
| Gold | 185 | Last ordinary smelting skill-up option in the checked records |
This is not an uninterrupted 1-300 smelting route. Iron becomes gray at 140, while current sources disagree on Smelt Gold's learning gate: the Forever Mining guide gives 155, but the current skill listing shows 170. Gather through the gap and check your trainer before buying a Gold batch. Smelt Gold turns gray at 185 in the checked records; continue with actual deposits after that rather than buying Mithril or Truesilver ore for nonexistent smelting points. The current profession window remains the final check.
Check current ore and bar prices, the recipe's output and auction-house costs before buying ore to resell as bars. Smelting is not guaranteed profit or guaranteed break-even. Raw ore can be worth more than bars for another buyer's profession leveling, and Bronze has its own two-metal conversion. Keep the materials your actual Blacksmithing or Engineering route requires.
An ordinary smelting recipe does not make a node mineable before its separate gathering threshold. Likewise, a tool bonus can permit a gathering action without increasing the trained base skill used by a rank requirement.
Learning Dark Iron smelting
For a later Forever Dark Iron plan, the inherited unlock requires Mining 230 and a trip to Blackrock Depths. Confirm that the quest and forge restriction remain available before farming its materials. Bring 2 Star Rubies, 20 Gold Bars and 10 Truesilver Bars for The Spectral Chalice.
- Reach the Chamber of the Seven with a group and speak to Gloom'rel before starting the event that makes the room hostile.
- Use the Spectral Chalice and provide the requested materials, then finish the conversation that teaches Smelt Dark Iron.
- Proceed to the Black Forge deeper in the instance when the route is safe. Ordinary capital forges cannot smelt Dark Iron.
- Each Dark Iron Bar consumes 8 Dark Iron Ore in the Classic baseline. Plan both ore and access before promising bars to a Blacksmith.
Do not kill the relevant NPC or trigger the encounter before your Miner completes the learning interaction. A Blacksmith without Mining can instead buy bars or coordinate with a Miner who has the unlock.
New smelts and Scarce materials
Current records distinguish Pyrite, Bauxite and Pitchblende as Scarce Mining materials. They are bonus crafting inputs, not ordinary ore tiers that replace Copper, Iron or Thorium. Keep them until you have checked the recipes and any crate turn-in you intend to complete.
| New smelt | Reported learning skill | Inputs per crafting action | Access limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smelt Azerothium | 275 | 2 Pitchblende, 1 Coal | Obtain the trainer recipe and check the current forge requirement; current database colors do not make this a 275-300 leveling finish |
| Smelt Heavy Thorium | 300 | 1 Heavy Thorium Ore | Its current spell explicitly requires a Molten Foundry, not an ordinary capital forge |
These are material-production plans, outside the gathering route's ordinary ore progression. Heavy Thorium Ore's actual gathering location and required skill remain unknown in the checked sources. Its name does not establish that every Rich Thorium Vein drops it. The camping guide explains the advanced Mining workstation and blueprint requirement. Check actual output before promising a batch of bars; public sources disagree about embedded recipe output counts.
Valuable finds and skill equipment
Rich Thorium can yield Arcane Crystals used for Arcanite transmutes, along with other gems. A crystal is a chance outcome, not a guaranteed amount per circuit. Current Miner's Cape supplies +2 Mining while equipped and requires character level 17; Goblin Mining Helmet supplies +5 while equipped but requires Engineering 205 and mail equipment access. Effective-skill bonuses can unlock a node early without increasing trained base skill or meeting the next rank gate. Inspect stacking and item restrictions before assuming a low-level character can reach every special node.
Two current Deadmines drops add different utility. Smelting Pants from Gilnid requires level 16 and leather equipment access; while equipped, it reduces crafting time for Copper, Tin, Bronze and Silver smelts by 25%; it does not speed every smelt. Rockslicer from Rhahk'Zor requires level 18 and has 30 charges for gathering Copper, Tin, Silver or Iron without Mining. It is a limited-use tool, not a permanent extra primary profession or access to Thorium. Check the actual item's class and equipment-use requirements rather than assuming every character can use a two-handed axe.
Stone is a useful Engineering and Blacksmithing input. Compare its use or sale value before deleting it to make room for ore. Keep enough bag space to loot the node completely and avoid repeated travel to sell a half-full mixed inventory.
Forever checks and tips
Blizzard confirms new profession recipes, camp objects and a Legacy gathering perk, but its overview does not publish a final new-ore spawn map. New bars or materials in item data do not prove a specific zone, vein or skill requirement. Verify the actual recipe and reagent source before buying a speculative stockpile.
Blizzard's October 15 notes reduce Poor Copper Vein density in starter areas. That current change is another reason not to promise a fixed number of nodes per loop. Use the camping guide for workstations; do not assume any camp forge can replace the Black Forge's recipe restriction. The current Forever Find Minerals tooltip permits only one tracking type at a time. A Miner who also learns Herbalism can keep both professions, but must switch between Find Minerals and Find Herbs to change the minimap results. Dwarves' revised Find Treasure can remain active alongside another tracker; that racial exception does not make both gathering trackers simultaneous.
Before each loop, check rank cap, Mining Pick, effective skill, character safety and whether the ore has a real use in your plan. Before smelting, check forge access, recipe color and the exact conversion.
In Forever, Bountiful Harvest increases specifically Scarce materials from Mining, Herbalism and Skinning in the current public data. It is not a promise to double every ordinary herb, ore or leather drop. Working Overtime separately affects skill-up chance; neither supplies a fixed number of nodes or corpses to 300.
