Fishing Leveling Guide, 1 to 300
A Forever Fishing plan with rank gates, safe-water skill-ups, the Nat Pagle quest, useful catches and current camp and lure rules.
Researched from public sources, not tested in game. Some details come from Classic and may differ in Forever.

At a glance
Fishing is secondary, so it does not use either primary profession slot. You need a learned Fishing skill, an equipped pole and water where your effective skill is sufficient. Lures and some poles raise effective skill; they do not permanently add points to your trained base skill.
Use this Fishing plan in Forever. Its rank structure is reported in the beta, while water distributions and the higher quest route retain inherited reference details that need current-client confirmation. This is public-source research, not our own game test.
| Rank | Gate and access |
|---|---|
| Apprentice, cap 75 | The current Forever source reports no Apprentice level gate |
| Journeyman, cap 150 | Skill 50 and level 10, from an ordinary Fishing trainer |
| Expert, cap 225 | Skill 125 and level 20; use Expert Fishing, The Bass and You from Old Man Heming in Booty Bay |
| Artisan, cap 300 | Skill 225 and level 35; complete Nat Pagle, Angler Extreme from Nat Pagle in Tidefury Cove, Dustwallow Marsh |
Capital trainers include Arnold Leland in Stormwind, Grimnur Stonebrand in Ironforge and Astaia in Darnassus; Horde uses Lumak in Orgrimmar, Armand Cromwell in Undercity and Kah Mistrunner in Thunder Bluff. Starting-zone trainers stand near suitable water. Learn the next rank before its cap, otherwise more catches do not increase the capped skill.
How to fish
- Buy a Fishing Pole and appropriate lures from a Fishing or trade supplier. Equip the pole and apply the lure to it.
- Put the Fishing ability on your action bar. In Classic it is in the General spellbook; Forever's professions interface can expose it through its profession-ability controls.
- Face open water and cast. Watch the bobber and loot promptly when it splashes; clicking before the bite or after the cast expires does not catch the fish.
- If fish repeatedly escape, use a stronger eligible lure or move to easier water. An area can allow a cast before your skill is high enough to avoid escapes.
- Re-equip your combat weapon before fighting. A pole left equipped can make an ordinary quest pull unexpectedly difficult.
There is no ore-style requirement to move into harder water for each skill bracket in original Classic. You can continue gaining skill in safe low-level water after learning the next rank. The destinations below are useful for catches, recipe access and the Artisan trip, not mandatory skill-up zones. Increasing skill normally takes progressively more successful catches; there is no fixed material list or guaranteed number of casts to 300.
Choose a lure
These ordinary lures retain the following requirements and effects in the current Forever item records. Apply one to the equipped pole and check its remaining duration before starting a long session.
| Lure | Required Fishing | Effective skill bonus | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shiny Bauble | No Fishing requirement displayed | +25 | 10 minutes |
| Nightcrawlers | 50 | +50 | 10 minutes |
| Bright Baubles | 100 | +75 | 10 minutes |
| Aquadynamic Fish Attractor | 100 | +100 | 5 minutes |
A lure helps meet the water's effective-skill requirement; it does not unlock Expert or Artisan or increase the trained base skill used for those gates. The stronger Attractor lasts half as long as Bright Baubles, so budget both stock and reapplication time. Luremaster needs an active lure, not one that expired while you were travelling.
The route by skill range
| Skill | Practical destination | Why go there and what to check |
|---|---|---|
| 1-75 | Starting-zone water: Crystal Lake, Stonebull Lake, Brightwater Lake, or the equivalent safe area | Easy access to a trainer and low-level cooking fish; use Shiny Bauble if needed |
| 75-150 | A capital's fishable water or nearby low-level zone | Train Journeyman first; Nightcrawlers require skill 50 and help where escapes occur |
| 150-225 | Safe Dustwallow Marsh water, or continue easier water | Use the Expert book before the cap; Dustwallow positions you near Nat Pagle, but is not required for skill-ups |
| 225-300 | After the Artisan quest, choose safe water or fish useful catches in Feralas, Tanaris, Hinterlands or other suitable zones | Use a lure appropriate to that subzone; some endgame water needs much more effective skill than ordinary coastal water |
Buy the Expert book and a lure supply from Old Man Heming before leaving Booty Bay. A higher-level character or another player can supply the book if the journey is unsafe, subject to the item's current binding. You still need its learning requirements.
Nat Pagle, Angler Extreme in order
At level 35 and base Fishing 225, take the quest from Nat on the small island at Tidefury Cove, southwest of Theramore. Catch each fish while the quest is active. The named subzone matters: fishing in an arbitrary pond elsewhere in the zone does not guarantee the quest fish.
| Quest fish | Where to cast in the Classic baseline | Travel note |
|---|---|---|
| Feralas Ahi | Verdantis River, Feralas | The river near the central bridge; use a suitable lure to reduce escapes |
| Sar'theris Striker | Sar'theris Strand, Desolace | Western coast near Shadowprey Village; avoid hostile settlement guards |
| Savage Coast Blue Sailfin | Savage Coast, Stranglethorn Vale | Western coastline; use cleared beach away from hostile camps |
| Misty Reed Mahi Mahi | Misty Reed Strand, Swamp of Sorrows | Eastern coast; watch nearby higher-level enemies |
One practical travel order is Dustwallow to Feralas, north to Desolace, then the Eastern Kingdoms pair in Stranglethorn Vale and Swamp of Sorrows before returning to Nat. Your known flight paths and faction can make another order shorter. Do not promise a fixed number of casts: the quest catches are random. Return all four fish to Nat to unlock Artisan, then continue gaining skill.
Fish worth keeping
Stonescale Eel feeds Stonescale Oil and defensive Alchemy consumables. Suitable Classic coastal waters include parts of Tanaris, Feralas and Azshara. Night improves the catch distribution in relevant waters; the eel is not universally restricted to nighttime. Bay of Storms has demanding effective-skill requirements and nearby danger, so it is not automatically the best place for a new Artisan fisher.
Raw Nightfin Snapper feeds Nightfin Soup. Its catch rate varies by server time, with the strongest window around midnight to 06:00 in the Classic reference. It is not correct to call every hour outside night impossible: location and the daytime window matter. Raw Sunscale Salmon has a different time pattern. Use the server clock rather than your computer's local timezone when planning a fish-specific session.
Winter Squid and Raw Summer Bass are seasonal catches in Classic. Check the current season and version before buying a recipe with the expectation of catching its fish that day. A useful Cooking recipe does not remove its raw fish's availability constraint.
Open Big-mouth Clams for their contents after checking inventory space. Golden Pearls are valuable for high-end crafts such as the Runed Arcanite Rod, but are rare outcomes, not a guaranteed yield per hour. Pools and floating wreckage can offer different loot from ordinary open water; position the bobber inside the pool when targeting it.
Keep Darkclaw Lobster for current Forever Cooking. Grand Lobster Banquet's current recipe consumes 12 per craft alongside Turtle Meat, Buzzard Wing and Exquisite Spices. Its food requires character level 55, so this is future raid preparation rather than a level-30 beta meal. Check recipe acquisition before buying a large fish batch, and distinguish one craft's inputs from the number of portions that its feast serves.
Raw Spotted Yellowtail and Raw Rockscale Cod also supply a new feast. The current Specklefin Feast recipe uses 12 Yellowtail and 3 Cod per craft, plus 4 Raptor Flesh and 1 Exquisite Spices. It likewise requires level 55 to eat. Save useful catches for a known recipe instead of treating every high-level fish as vendor trash.
Cooking, camps and practical tips
Buy fish recipes before filling your bags with the raw fish. Brilliant Smallfish, Longjaw Mud Snapper and Bristle Whisker Catfish support early Cooking; Spotted Yellowtail, Nightfin and Sunscale support later stages. Not every catch has a useful leveling recipe at your current Cooking skill.
Keep lures, enough bag space and a spare route when the intended shore is hostile or crowded. Fishing requires active attention to the bobber even when you are waiting for a group. Watch each cast and loot the bobber yourself.
Forever gives Fishing three camp objects with current item records:
| Object | Required Fishing to use | Current benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Fish Bowl | 20 | You and others sitting nearby gain 8% increased stats; mutually exclusive with Blessing of Kings |
| Fishing Rack | 140 | One hour of uncommon-fish access, Fishing-skill lures and the Fish Bowl benefit |
| Fishing Hut | 300 | One hour of rare-fish access, Fishing-skill lures and the Fish Bowl benefit |
All require a nearby campfire and share the one-hour camping-feature cooldown before applicable Legacy reductions. The Rack and Hut can replace a Bowl at the fire. The tooltips do not establish a guaranteed rare catch, a complete fish-location table or a way to ignore the water's skill requirement. Use the camping guide for unlock quests, blueprints and placing the fire. Obtain the actual recipe before assuming skill 140 alone gives you a Rack.
Check the actual water, lure requirement, rank cap and quest status before assuming a failed catch is a bug.
In Forever, the current Luremaster perk can grant an extra fish while a lure is active. That changes catch output, not the Fishing rank or minimum effective skill of the water. Do not treat two fish from one catch as two guaranteed skill points or double the quest-fish chance without current evidence.
