At a glance
Cooking is secondary: you can learn it alongside two primary professions, Fishing and First Aid. Meat and fish become food, and the food's benefit depends on eating for the required duration. Fishing is a useful companion, but a meat route works without it.
The route uses current Forever recipe data. Its 225-300 training and vendor access remain conditional while the public beta is capped below the Artisan character gate. This is public-source research, not our own game test.
| Rank | Gate and access |
|---|---|
| Apprentice, cap 75 | The current Forever source reports no Apprentice level gate |
| Journeyman, cap 150 | Train at skill 50 before reaching 75; current Forever guidance lists no added character-level requirement |
| Expert, cap 225 | Buy and use Expert Cookbook at skill 125 from Shandrina at Mystral Lake, Ashenvale, for Alliance or Wulan in Shadowprey Village, Desolace, for Horde; the current Forever book tooltip has no character-level requirement |
| Artisan, cap 300 | At skill 225 and level 35, complete Clamlette Surprise with Dirge Quikcleave in Gadgetzan |
Capital trainers include Stephen Ryback in Stormwind, Daryl Riknussun in Ironforge and Alegorn in Darnassus; Horde uses Zamja in Orgrimmar, Eunice Burch in Undercity and Aska Mistrunner in Thunder Bluff. They teach the early ranks. Cook at a nearby fire or an appropriate cooking station.
The route by skill range
Choose one available recipe per row, not every alternative. Counts are starting budgets of cooking actions, with extra crafts possible when recipes turn yellow or green. Buy spices and ordinary liquids from vendors instead of assuming they drop with the meat.
| Skill | Example route and starting craft budget | Batch ingredients | Recipe access |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-50 | About 55 Charred Wolf Meat or Roasted Boar Meat | 55 Stringy Wolf Meat or 55 Chunk of Boar Meat | Trainer |
| 50-100 | About 55 Longjaw Mud Snapper | 55 Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper | Catherine Leland, Stormwind area; Naal Mistrunner, Thunder Bluff, and other Fishing suppliers |
| 100-130 | About 30 Bristle Whisker Catfish | 30 Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish | Catherine Leland, Stormwind; Naal Mistrunner or Sewa Mistrunner, Thunder Bluff, and other suppliers |
| 130-175 | About 45 Curiously Tasty Omelet | 45 Raptor Egg, 45 Hot Spices | Kendor Kabonka, Stormwind, for Alliance; Keena, Hammerfall, for Horde |
| 175-225 | About 50 Roast Raptor | 50 Raptor Flesh, 50 Hot Spices | Hammon Karwn or Keena in Arathi Highlands; Ogg'marr in Dustwallow Marsh |
| 225-275 | About 65 Spotted Yellowtail | 65 Raw Spotted Yellowtail | Gikkix, Steamwheedle Port, Tanaris |
| 275-300 | About 35 Poached Sunscale Salmon | 35 Raw Sunscale Salmon | Gikkix, Steamwheedle Port |
Learn Journeyman before batching past 75, use Expert Cookbook before passing 150 and complete Artisan before trying to pass 225. A recipe can be learned before the bracket where this route uses it; the bracket is the route choice, not always the recipe's minimum skill.
The listed path needs roughly 55 starting meat, 55 Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper, 30 Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish, 45 Raptor Eggs, 50 Raptor Flesh, 95 Hot Spices, 65 Raw Spotted Yellowtail and 35 Raw Sunscale Salmon, plus the separate Artisan quest supplies. Buy only the next stage if prices or fishing catches may change your route.
Alternatives when ingredients are scarce
Brilliant Smallfish or Slitherskin Mackerel can replace the opening. Their recipes come from Fishing suppliers near starting waters. Smoked Bear Meat, Boiled Clams or Coyote Steak can cover part of 50-100; Boiled Clams also needs Refreshing Spring Water. Smoked Bear Meat becomes yellow earlier, so a 55-craft budget may be too small.
Bristle Whisker Catfish can continue toward 150 if you cannot obtain the omelet recipe. Dry Pork Ribs, Crab Cake or Goblin Deviled Clams can use loot already in your bags, with their appropriate spices. A Hillsbrad Soothing Turtle Bisque quest reward or Mithril Head Trout can replace the raptor section. Obtain the recipe before collecting its complete batch.
After 225, Monster Omelet uses Giant Eggs and two Soothing Spices per craft; Tender Wolf Steak uses Tender Wolf Meat and Soothing Spices. Their vendors differ: Himmik in Everlook and faction vendors in Felwood sell Monster Omelet, while Dirge sells Tender Wolf Steak. Filet of Redgill comes from Kelsey Yance in Booty Bay, not Gikkix. Nightfin Soup from Gikkix is a useful mana-regeneration alternative at 275 and needs the fish plus its water reagent. Compare both the raw fish and the vendor additions.
Artisan Cooking in order
- Reach skill 225 and character level 35. The optional city breadcrumb is I Know A Guy... from Daryl Riknussun for Alliance or To Gadgetzan You Go! from Zamja for Horde.
- Collect 12 Giant Eggs, 10 Zesty Clam Meat and 20 Alterac Swiss. These are quest turn-ins, not the same supply as the subsequent cooking batch.
- Find Dirge Quikcleave inside Gadgetzan's inn, accept Clamlette Surprise and deliver all three materials. Use the reward to unlock the 300 cap.
- Visit Gikkix at Steamwheedle Port and buy the fish recipes you will use. Return with enough fish and spices to finish the chosen route.
Giant Eggs come from suitable higher-level birds; Zesty Clam Meat comes from Big-mouth Clams, and Alterac Swiss can be bought from appropriate food vendors. Ask another player or use the auction house if the enemies are unsafe for your level. A character can qualify for the profession quest before being able to farm all its ingredients comfortably.
Recipes worth keeping
Inherited food leads include Nightfin Soup for mana recovery, Grilled Squid for Agility and Smoked Desert Dumplings for Strength. Check their current Forever effects and recipe availability. Their value depends on class, availability and the game's version. The dumpling recipe comes from the Desert Recipe and Sharing the Knowledge chain in Silithus and requires the relevant Cooking skill; it is not a normal capital-trainer purchase.
Dirge's Kickin' Chimaerok Chops is an inherited high-end reward from the Scepter of the Shifting Sands quest chain, not an ordinary vendor recipe or a guaranteed farm drop. It is unrelated to simply unlocking entry to the Ahn'Qiraj raid. Check the actual recipe reagents before planning a batch; the long quest access and Chimaerok Tenderloin are the important constraints.
Forever campfires, food and tips
Forever replaces the simple fire placement with craftable campfire kits. Basic Campfire Kit uses 1 Simple Wood and a reusable Flint and Tinder to craft, then can be placed from your bags. Crafting tools and the kit you consume are different items. A pre-existing nearby fire can save a kit.
The current Tasty Raptor Bites tooltip is a concrete low-level example: eat for at least 10 seconds to gain 1 Intellect for 15 minutes and 5% more experience from kills. Its recipe requires Cooking 25 and binds on pickup; each craft consumes 1 Raptor Egg and 4 Mild Spices. Obtain the recipe on the Cook before buying the batch. The kill-experience bonus does not imply a quest-turn-in bonus, and other foods have their own stats and requirements. Eat until the actual Well Fed buff appears.
Use the camping guide for camp capacity and object rules. Verify current recipe color and Artisan access before buying the final fish batch, and keep banked food ingredients separate from cloth and herbs that Cooking cannot use.
In Forever, Working Overtime can improve skill-up chance, while Master Chef can create extra food output. An extra result is not evidence of a second skill-up attempt. The quantities above do not assume either perk, and neither justifies an exact percentage cut to the material budget.
