At a glance

Priest heals with Holy or Discipline and deals ranged Shadow damage. You bring direct healing, healing over time, shields, dispels, Shackle Undead and group buffs. Shadow is a damage role, not a replacement for a dedicated healer merely because Vampiric Embrace produces some party healing.

Build examples use beta build 1.60.1.70425, snapshot 2026-10-16. This is public-source research, not an in-game test. The current beta cap is 30; level-60 allocations are higher-level plans. Without the Legacy Talented perk, class points begin at level 10. Dual Specialization unlocks at level 40. Visit a major-city class trainer to change talents.

Alliance Priests include Human, Dwarf, Night Elf and Gnome; Horde includes Undead and Troll. Every Priest learns Fear Ward at level 20, and each race has revised Priest-specific spells. Divine Spirit is baseline at level 30 rather than a Discipline talent.

Choose and use the Priest racial spells

Each Priest race has two class-specific spells in addition to its ordinary racial abilities. These first learning levels and effects use the current beta spell records; train later ranks when available. Fear Ward is a separate baseline spell for every Priest at level 20.

RaceFirst spell, level 10Second spell, level 20
HumanDivine Grace: instant heal on another friendly target below 50% health; removes that target's Weakened Soul. Cannot heal yourselfFeedback: a short anti-magic window burns an attacking spellcaster's mana and deals corresponding Shadow damage
DwarfDesperate Prayer: instant self-healChastise: Holy damage and a two-second immobilize on a Humanoid; a root is not a universal spell interrupt
Night ElfStarshards: six-second Arcane damage channelElune's Grace: 50% lower chance to be hit by melee/ranged attacks for 15 seconds or until three misses; it is not complete damage immunity
GnomeConfounding Flash: half-second cast confuses up to five nearby enemies for three seconds; damage breaks itContingency Plan: pre-place a 30-second ward; a damage event dropping the ally below 35% health triggers an absorb and healing over time. Only one Plan per target
UndeadTouch of Weakness: the next melee hit against you triggers Shadow damage and an Attack Power reductionDark Sacrifice: converts your health into mana over 15 seconds, with Spirit adding mana; budget that health loss before incoming damage
TrollHex of Weakness: reduces enemy Attack Power and healing receivedShadowguard: three charges of retaliatory Shadow damage when attacks or spells hit you; it does not generate threat

Divine Grace, Desperate Prayer and Contingency Plan currently have ten-minute cooldowns. Put the relevant emergency spell on a reachable binding, and use the current rank's value rather than a level-60 preview number. Contingency Plan is preparation before damage, not an immediate heal for a target already injured without another trigger.

Leveling build

Starting plan. Wand Specialization uses two ranks rather than five. Shadow Focus is in the first row, and Vampiric Embrace is the 16-point milestone. Shadowform reduces Shadow mana costs and allows non-healing spells, while Shadow Weaving benefits only you. Devouring Plague becomes baseline at level 20 and Shadow Word: Death at level 32. These spells are not restricted to their former Priest races, and the two-rank wand talent leaves points for other early choices.

A safe solo sequence is a ranged damage opener, Shadow Word: Pain if it will run long enough, then efficient casts and wand damage while the enemy approaches. Wand shooting requires half a second standing still; moving continuously prevents the shot. Use Power Word: Shield to prevent damage or pushback when needed, rather than refreshing it every global regardless of mana. Finish a nearly dead enemy efficiently instead of paying for a full expensive cast. In Forever, Shadow Word: Death damages you if it does not kill the target; do not press it at low health without accounting for that backlash.

Endgame builds by role

Forever Discipline. Soul Warding at 16 talent points supports Power Word: Shield, Penance at 21 points supplies a targeted channel, and Divine Aegis rewards non-periodic critical heals. Power Infusion remains a deep-tree option. Shield before expected damage, use Penance or a direct heal when health needs restoring, and respect Weakened Soul. Renewed Hope interacts with that debuff and follow-up heals. Absorption is not a reason to ignore incoming health loss or assume every tank benefits from an identical spell sequence.

Forever Holy. Binding Heal at 16 talent points heals both you and the target. Litany of Light rewards changing healing spells, while Prayer of Mending at 31 points triggers when its target takes damage or receives non-periodic healing, then jumps to another nearby party or raid member. Use efficient direct heals for predictable damage, a faster heal for emergencies, Renew for damage that will continue, and Prayer of Healing when several members of the selected party need healing. Forever's Prayer of Healing can target another party in the raid; it does not heal the entire raid in one cast.

Do not alternate spells only to trigger a talent if doing so heals the wrong player or wastes mana. Cast-cancel a slow heal when it is no longer needed, and choose an appropriate spell rank for routine damage. Downranking trades throughput for efficiency and has coefficient penalties; test the rank on the actual tank before relying on it in a dangerous fight.

Forever Shadow. Shadow Weaving now supports only the casting Priest. Keep your damage-over-time spells active when their duration will pay off, use Mind Blast and Mind Flay as the main direct and channeled damage, and weave Shadow Word: Death when its backlash is safe. With Devouring Contagion, a target dying under Devouring Plague can spread its remaining duration to two nearby enemies; avoid spreading it into assigned crowd control. Early Demise, when allocated, improves Death against weakened enemies. Vampiric Embrace is a timed support window rather than a permanent reason to drop a healer. Dark Inspiration is a separate party-Spirit option triggered by Mind Blast or a completed Mind Flay channel. It is not allocated in the example below; spend its ranks before promising that buff to the group.

Current Forever allocations

Choose a role below and open its checkpoint or full plan in the current Priest calculator. Level-30 checkpoints spend 21 points; level-60 plans spend 51. The lists show every allocated rank.

These checkpoints and level ranges assume zero ranks in the Legacy Talented perk. Talented makes points available earlier, but the total remains capped at 51. Select your actual Talented rank in the calculator when using an earlier checkpoint. Follow the listed order; each number is additional points in that step, and omitted talents have zero points.

Shadow solo and ranged damage: 20/0/31. Spirit Tap supports solo finishing blows. Raid-oriented variants can move those points when another legal route to Shadowform is maintained.

What to look for on gear

Healers want healing power, Intellect, Spirit and useful mana regeneration. Spell critical strike has specific value for Inspiration, Divine Aegis and other relevant talents; compare it with mana and reliable healing instead of treating it as universally best. Shadow wants spell damage, applicable hit and enough mana to sustain the encounter. Carry separate sets if you heal and deal damage.

Current Shadow Focus reaches 5% hit for Shadow spells, not the larger value in older talent trees. Count its spell coverage when comparing damage gear. Friendly heals do not need a damage hit cap; Holy Precision instead supports Holy damage. Final boss hit thresholds still require current Forever evidence.

The inherited mana-regeneration model suppresses normal Spirit regeneration for a period after spending mana; talents such as Meditation permit part of it while casting. Combat itself is not the same as continuously casting. Forever substantially improves relevant Spirit-regeneration talents; check the build's actual effect instead of assuming every mana user receives an identical passive amount.

Current dungeon examples. Arcane Anomaly in City of Dalaran drops Runemender's Seal, requiring level 27: 4 Stamina, 7 Spirit and up to 9 healing with 3 spell damage. Shade of the Archmage drops Ponderous Orb, requiring level 30: 2 Intellect, 8 Spirit and up to 11 healing with 4 spell damage. The Orb needs a one-handed main weapon. Compare their healing and damage values separately; 11 healing is not 11 Shadow damage.

Consumables, utility and group play

Bring water, healing and mana potions, bandages, caster or mana-regeneration food, and the current reagents for Prayer of Fortitude, Prayer of Spirit and other group spells you use. Healers can use healing elixirs, mana-regeneration consumables and Brilliant Mana Oil. Shadow uses spell-damage consumables. A flask is an encounter and budget decision, not a condition for healing a normal dungeon.

The current early utility gates are Cure Disease at level 14, Dispel Magic at level 18 and Shackle Undead at level 20. Abolish Disease is learned at level 32, above the current beta cap; use the single-cast cure when disease removal is needed before then.

Assign dispels and Fear Ward before the pull. Current Fear Ward lasts three minutes, has a three-minute cooldown and is consumed by blocking one fear; track the intended target rather than assuming one cast covers every fear or the entire group. Use Dispel Magic and Cure or Abolish Disease on effects they actually remove; an expensive dispel cannot fix a curse. Shackle an undead target where assigned and keep damage off it. Fade lowers threat temporarily, so stop healing into an uncontrolled pack and move toward the tank instead of assuming it permanently erases threat.

Mind Control starts at level 30 and controls a Humanoid within the current rank's target-level limit. Plan the channel, your unattended character and the release with the group. Later raid assignments need the appropriate higher trained rank; the Naxxramas guide explains that separate preparation.

Warrior Rage from incoming damage ignores absorption under Forever's published rules. Use a necessary shield when it protects the tank; communicate about survival and healing rather than withholding it because of an old Rage assumption.

PvP and common mistakes

Discipline and Holy provide durable support through shields, dispels and direct heals; Shadow trades some healing access for pressure and control. Keep allies in range, use Psychic Scream where feared enemies will not pull another group, and save a dispel or interrupt window for the effect that matters. Mana Burn starts at level 24 with a three-second cast. Use it for an assigned mana-drain target or PvP pressure while keeping healing coverage, rather than letting an ally die during the cast.

Do not overheal a full-health tank while another party member is dying, pre-shield an entire raid without mana or assignment, or cast Shadow Word: Death into fatal backlash. Know which spells require leaving Shadowform in the version you play. Check Fear Ward, current racial spells, healing ranks and available reagents before an important run.
