At a glance
Hunter deals damage with a ranged weapon, ammunition and a pet. Beast Mastery emphasizes the pet, Marksmanship the Hunter's ranged attacks, and Forever's Survival tree adds a deliberate melee and trap path. A pet can tank ordinary quest enemies; that does not make Hunter a replacement for a dungeon tank.
Build examples use beta build 1.60.1.70425, snapshot 2026-10-16. This is public-source research, not an in-game test. The current beta cap is 30; level-60 allocations are higher-level plans. Without the Legacy Talented perk, class points begin at level 10. Dual Specialization unlocks at level 40. Visit a major-city class trainer to change talents.
Alliance Hunters include Human, Dwarf, Night Elf and Skyborne; Horde includes Orc, Troll, Tauren and Skyborne. Check the revised racial abilities for your chosen role.
Leveling build
Starting plan. Aimed Shot is baseline at level 20. Summon Hawk is the new 16-point Beast Mastery talent, with Unleashed Fury and Ferocity also supporting Hawks. Bestial Discipline adds Spirit regeneration while spending mana. Intimidation requires Bestial Swiftness in the published tree. Build toward Bestial Wrath while keeping your pet alive; train baseline Aimed Shot separately from Beast Mastery talents.
- Complete the level-10 pet-training class quest. Feed the pet suitable food, check its happiness and learned abilities, and visit the available pet trainer. Taming a new family does not automatically teach you every rank of every pet ability.
- Send the pet first and let it establish threat. Apply Hunter's Mark on a durable target, start Auto Shot and stop moving long enough for it to fire.
- Use Mend Pet before the pet is nearly dead. Growl is useful solo; turn its automatic use off when a player tank is holding the target.
- Use Concussive Shot, Wing Clip, traps and terrain to regain distance. Ranged attacks have a minimum range; standing inside it and repeatedly pressing a shot will not solve the pull.
- Keep ammunition, pet food, drink and a way to revive your pet. A full quiver or ammo pouch matters more than a tiny stat upgrade before a long dungeon.
Do not assume a pet automatically takes the same safe jump or shortcut you do. Dismiss it before a risky dungeon drop and summon it again after landing.
New-race pet-training leads
The documented level-10 Valanaar route sends you to Quel'ana Quickgale in Valanaar. The documented beta trial order is Windsong Crawler → Vuldren Alpha → Ornery Galestrider, returning each Taming Rod to Quel'ana. Crawlers are near water; the other two targets are in the Gustberry Lowlands.
After the trials, complete Training the Beast with Quel'dora Quickgale in Valanaar to learn Beast Training, Feed Pet and Revive Pet. A practice rod tame alone does not complete that preparation. The sequence and final dialogue are visible in recorded beta gameplay, and current quest records confirm the three trial objectives; follow your active quest log if the chain changes. Current indexed eligibility names High Order Skyborne. A Windshaper should confirm the corresponding quest at their own trainer before following this route; the shared objectives alone do not establish variant eligibility. Other races use their own trainer chains.
Human follow-up: after the three Taming the Beast trials, complete Training the Beast with Isaac Chan in Goldshire. The current quest explicitly supplies the training, feeding and revival preparation. Do not stop after the final practice tame merely because a pet is following you.
Pick a pet for the assignment
Your pet family supplies a real utility choice. These are current first-rank examples, not a promise that every wild member teaches the ability or that every boss accepts its debuff. Learn the actual rank and check Focus costs and automatic-cast settings.
| Family | Current family tool | Practical use and limit |
|---|---|---|
| Wolf | Furious Howl | One-minute melee Attack Power buff to party or raid members within 15 yards of the wolf; position the pet near the melee players who need it |
| Tallstrider | Dust Cloud | Target Armor reduction; coordinate the group's assigned armor debuff rather than assuming every similar effect stacks |
| Bird of Prey | Mine! | Three-second disarm; requires a target susceptible to disarming |
| Spider | Web | Four-second immobilize with Nature damage; a root is not a silence and the damage can disrupt other control |
| Bat | Sonic Blast | Increases spell casting time for 20 seconds; this is a cast slow, not an interrupt or school lockout |
| Turtle | Shell Shield | Twelve seconds of 50% damage reduction, with slower but harder pet attacks; useful when the pet must survive a dangerous pull |
| Bear | Swipe | Hits up to three nearby enemies; keep it off automatic use around assigned crowd control |
| Crocolisk | Dismember | Six-second healing-received reduction; choose it for an actual healing target rather than treating it as a universal tanking ability |
Pet stats scale from the Hunter, but current beta notes prevent pets receiving stat-increasing player buffs. A family utility buff does not mean you can bypass that restriction by buffing the pet like another player.
Endgame builds by role
Forever Beast Mastery. Keep the pet active for Focused Fire and pet talents. Use Summon Hawk as part of the build's damage cycle, recognizing that it shares a cooldown with Arcane Shot. Pet family choice now includes a unique family ability and scaling from your gear. A wolf's nearby raid melee-Attack-Power support, a turtle's survival or another family's control may be more useful than choosing solely by an old attack-speed ranking.
Forever Marksmanship. Lone Wolf is the 11-point petless option, Trueshot Aura moves earlier and benefits the raid within its range, and Sniper Shot is the 31-point talent. Careful Aim converts Intellect into Attack Power and is a prerequisite for Mortal Shots in the published tree. Rapid Recuperation supports mana recovery. Choose explicitly between a pet build and Lone Wolf: leaving the pet active defeats the latter's condition.
Forever Survival. Surefooted, Predator's Edge, Resourcefulness, Strider Kick and Lacerating Strikes support melee and trap play. Expose Prey enables Mongoose Bite through attacks against your marked target. Resourcefulness's mana-regeneration effect triggers from critical melee or ranged abilities, not trap criticals or ordinary autoattacks. Strider Kick remains usable while disarmed. This is a melee damage plan with trap interactions. Gear, weapon training and the actual melee ability requirements need to match the build.
Ranged priority. Maintain Auto Shot uptime: current beta notes require 0.5 seconds standing still before it fires. Moving repeatedly can prevent that shot. Auto Shot continues during Aimed Shot and Sniper Shot casts. Use your build's major shot when you can safely finish it. Multi-Shot shares a cooldown with Aimed Shot, while Arcane Shot no longer does; Sniper Shot adds a long cast. Aimed Shot has a two-second cast and shares its six-second cooldown with Multi-Shot, so choose the useful attack for that window. Current base ranges for Auto Shot, Arcane Shot, Multi-Shot and Aimed Shot are 8-35 yards before talent extensions; moving inside eight yards disables those shots rather than creating another ranged firing position. Use Multi-Shot or Volley only when it is safe to hit the additional targets.
Melee priority. Aspect of the Beast activates the melee attack-speed proc from Deadly Aspects in the later Beast Mastery support allocation; Aspect of the Hawk serves the ranged version. Keep the correct tracking active for Improved Tracking, use Hunter's Mark for Expose Prey, maintain the bleed supplied by Lacerating Strikes through Mongoose Bite, and use Strider Kick and your melee attacks while managing distance and trap access. At the level-30 checkpoint, Lacerating Strikes is not yet available. Use Raptor Strike, Mongoose Bite when a dodge or Expose Prey allows it, and the allocated Strider Kick, while keeping the target marked and controlling traps.
Improved Tracking needs the matching creature tracker. Current tracking-spell learning levels are Beasts at 1, Humanoids at 10, Undead at 18 and Elementals at 26; Demons at 32, Giants at 40 and Dragonkin at 50 are beyond the beta cap. Track Hidden and gathering trackers do not meet that creature-type condition. Change back from Find Herbs or Find Minerals before relying on the damage bonus.
Current Forever allocations
Choose a role below and open its checkpoint or full plan in the current Hunter calculator. Level-30 checkpoints spend 21 points; level-60 plans spend 51. The lists show every allocated rank.
These checkpoints and level ranges assume zero ranks in the Legacy Talented perk. Talented makes points available earlier, but the total remains capped at 51. Select your actual Talented rank in the calculator when using an earlier checkpoint. Follow the listed order; each number is additional points in that step, and omitted talents have zero points.

What to look for on gear
Ranged builds want a strong ranged weapon, Agility, Attack Power, hit and critical strike. Stamina keeps you alive; Intellect supports mana and is directly offensive with Forever's Careful Aim. Spirit becomes useful when the build has the relevant regeneration talent, but it is not automatically better than damage stats. A Survival melee build also needs a suitable melee weapon and trained skill.
Surefooted supplies up to 3% hit in the current tree. Count it only when allocated, then compare the current weapon and target rules. The merged hit stat can support different attack types, but it does not establish a single universal cap for ranged shots, melee attacks and every spell effect.
Bows, guns and crossbows have separate weapon skills. Train a new type on safe enemies before bringing it to a boss. Compare ranged weapon damage and speed in the context of shot timing rather than refusing a major upgrade because its type differs from your old one.
Current dungeon examples. Relic Guardian in Excavation Site drops Golemsight Long Gun, requiring level 28 with 6 Agility and a 2.50 weapon speed. Compare its actual ranged damage to your current weapon and train Guns before the dungeon. For melee or general Agility gearing, Slitherwrap Girdle from Mana Devourer in City of Dalaran requires 28 and gives 9 Agility with 6 Stamina. An Agility belt does not remove the melee build's separate weapon and ability requirements.
Consumables, utility and PvP
Bring ammunition, pet food, appropriate food and mana or healing potions. Potential ranged supplies include Elixir of the Mongoose and Grilled Squid when available. Use protection potions for an assigned encounter. Learn Tranquilizing Shot at level 60 from its Tome when the content is available and coordinate a shot rotation on bosses that require it.
Disengage at level 20 is a melee-range threat-reduction move that requires a melee weapon and disables autoattack. It does not reposition you; create your escape space with movement and control.
Freezing Trap is learned at level 20; Feign Death follows at level 30. Use Freezing Trap for an assigned target and keep damage-over-time effects off it. Forever permits traps in combat and gives Fire and Frost trap categories separate cooldowns. You can maintain one active trap of each category; placing another of the same category replaces its predecessor. A trap still appears at your feet; plan where the target will reach it.
Feign Death can recover a failed pull or reduce threat, but can fail. Stop attacking, watch the result and leave room for the tank to recover. The current Forever tooltip warns that remaining feigned for the full six minutes causes actual death: cancel it once safe, and never leave it running as an unattended safe state. Do not dismiss a living pet or abandon a fight in a way that sends an enemy straight to a healer. Use Aspect of the Pack cautiously: taking damage under it can daze allies.
In PvP, protect your ranged space with slows and traps, pressure the target with your pet, and save an escape path for the dead zone. Choose pet control deliberately rather than leaving it on aggressive behavior. Different family abilities have distinct control and defensive uses in Forever.
Forever checks and common mistakes
Viper Sting starts at level 36, above the current beta cap. Its current mana drain lasts eight seconds with a 15-second cooldown, so one Hunter cannot provide uninterrupted coverage. It also replaces your other Sting on that target. Assign later mana-drain coverage with the group to cover the gap.
Forever pets scale from your gear and cannot receive stat-increasing player buffs. Prepare their learned skills and choose the family utility your group needs.
